Dublin: Gerrard Bros. 1901. First Edition of Joyce's first appearance in a book and second appearance in print: an attack on the Irish Literary Theatre. A fine copy in a custom quarter-morocco slipcase. This piece along with Skeffington's which advocated equal University status for women was rejected by University College's school magazine. The authors paid two pounds and five shillings to have 85 copies of the booklet printed by a local stationer's shop. Now very scarce it would be unobtainable if not for a small cache apparently unearthed some decades ago but now absorbed into the market and collections. Gerrard Bros. unknown

Edited by Samuel Roth with associates including at least in name for the first two numbers Ezra Pound and Ford Madox Hueffer. The notorious periodical best remembered and justly reviled for its piracy of the installments from Joyce's WORK IN PROGRESS. While much of the material is reprinted with or without authorization from other sources Carl Rakosi and Louis Zukofsky both make early appearances in this volume. This was probably Richard Bissell Jr. head of the CIA in Mexico and involved in a plot to overthrow Castro. This copy was bound without pp. 783-814.
