FINNEGANS WAKE
London: Faber and Faber 1939. First Edition. 8vo publisher’s original red cloth decorated on the spine with gilt lettering and ruling with excellent and skillful facsimile of the original dustjacket. 628 pp. A handsome copy of the book with interesting notes to the verso of one leaf very little evidence of age or use the last leaf a bit loose at the hinge. RARE AND IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC WORK OF TWENTIETH CENTURY LITERATURE. “You were bred fed fostered and fattened from holy childhood up in this two easter island.and now forsooth a nogger among the blankards of this dastard century you have become of twosome twiminds forenenst gods hidden and discovered nay condemned fool anarch agoarch hiresiarch you have reared your disunited kingdom on the vacuum of your own most intensely doubtful soul.†Finnegans Wake
No book has ever been more ambitiously conceived than Joyce’s FINNEGAN'S WAKE. If ULYSSES represents the pinnacle of the Modernist movement FINNEGAN'S WAKE is a step beyond; it stands in the same relation to ULYSSES as ULYSSES does to A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST.—an extension which is also a completely new conception. Joyce envisioned the book as nothing less than a "history of the world." Seventeen years in the writing and composed in a sort of meta-language--"an Esperanto for the art of fiction"--it stands as a unique monument to language and literature and the modern age. Slocum and Calhoun A49; Bradbury The Modern World 157-176. About this work he stated “‘I might easily have written this story in the traditional manner. Every novelist knows the recipe. But I after all am trying to tell the story of this Chapelizod family in a new way. Time and the river and the mountain are the real heroes of my book. I am trying to build many planes of narrative with a single aesthetic purpose.’†Ellmann
This copy offers the the look of the original book but at a much better price since the original dustjacket is not present. Haveth Childers Everywhere
1930. First Edition. Signed. JOYCE James. Haveth Childers Everywhere. Fragment from Work in Progress. Paris: Henry Babou and Jack Kahane; New York: Fountain Press 1930. Slim folio original printed paper wraps uncut and unopened original glassine original gilt chemise and green cardboard slipcase. Housed in a custom chemise and clamshell box. $17500.First edition number 50 of only 100 signed copies on Imperial Hand-Made Iridescent Japan paper out of a total edition of 685 copies. A stunning copy. This is one of several fragments from Work in Progress published in 1939 as Finnegans Wake that Joyce issued to raise money while working on the mammoth project. One of the publishers Jack Kahane who idolized Joyce had originally asked Sylvia Beach to allow him to take over publication of Ulysses. Instead she introduced Kahane to Joyce who then agreed to let him publish Haveth Childers Everywhere. The effort nearly ruined Kahane and only by selling the American rights to the work were he and co-publisher Henry Babou able to save themselves from bankruptcy. When Faber and Faber was preparing the first London editions of Anna Livia Plurabelle and Haveth Childers Everywhere 1930 and 1931 respectively ""Joyce wrote rhymes for the 'blurb' on the dust jacket. The Haveth Childers verse is quoted in this description headline
He was a little annoyed when the publicity department
used them only on a mimeographed publicity release to which they prefixed a note: 'The Sales department puzzled as such departments are wont to be have sought some light on the two James Joyce contributions to Criterion Miscellany. Below the explanations offered are passed on that you may be able to derive similar enlightenment"" Ellmann 617n. Slocum and Cahoon A41. A beautiful fine copy in a slightly worn slipcase. paperback

ULYSSES
London: John Lane The Bodley Head 1936. First Edition English Issuance First Authorized English edition one of 900 copies only printed on special Japon vellum papers probably the most beautiful First Edition of ULYSSES ever printed. Tall thick royal 8vo publisher’s original full green polished linen buckram with the gilt lettering and pictorial decoration of the gilt bow designed by Eric Gill on the upper cover and spine housed in the rare printed dustjacket lettered in black on the upper cover and on the spine and decorated with the bow in red on the spine panel. xvi 766 pp. A well preserved copy the covers of the green cloth in bright and beautiful condition without any of the fading typical to the book the back just a bit mellowed at the tips the dustjacket with the price still intact and showing some light aging and some evidence of use or handling but whole and without major defects or substantial wear some tidying up to the verso. A pleasing survival with all aspects of a collector’s demands in good order. A HIGHLY IMPORTANT LITERARY FIRST EDITION ARGUABLY THE GREATEST WORK OF FICTION OF THE 2OTH CENTURY RARE IN THE DUSTJACKET. This an extremely impressive copy of the first authorized English edition. IT IS ALSO THE FIRST EDITION of ULYSSES PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN. The superb binding executed in full polished linen buckram has been especially designed for this great book. DESIGNS FOR THE BINDING EXECUTED IN GILT WERE ACCOMPLISHED BY ERIC GILL ONE OF THE MOST GIFTED MASTERS OF THE ART.
The typeface is extremely attractive and very readable the printing on fine paper makes the book unusually handsome and presents what is perhaps the most beautiful printing of ULYSSES ever accomplished.
Along with the text there are a series of appendices attached including copies of the International Protest against the unauthorized and mutilated printings of ULYSSES done especially in the United States; a copy of the injunction issued to prevent Samuel Roth from continuing his piracies of ULYSSES; a copy of Joyce’s letter to Bennet Cerf concerning the promotion legal fight and publication of ULYSSES on the author’s behalf; a copy of the decision of the US District Court which was rendered on December 6 1933 which lifted the ban on ULYSSES and a copy of the subsequent decision of the US Court of Appeals rendered in August of the following year which upheld the original decision; a copy of the forward to the first American edition and a bibliography of the works of James Joyce.
ULYSSES can be viewed as the pinnacle of the Modernist movement and its impact on all subsequent western literature is unmistakable. Such writers as Virginia Woolf John Dos Passos William Faulkner Samuel Beckett Malcolm Lowry and Anthony Burgess have all paid tribute consciously or unconsciously to Joyce's influence. Burgess as well pronounced it the greatest single work in the English literature of this century and he is not alone in that opinion.
John Lane, The Bodley Head hardcover

ULYSSES
Paris: Shakespeare and Company 1926. The first printing of Ulysses to have the type entirely reset work accomplished with Joyce’s participation the 8th printing overall and one of the key Shakespeare and Company printings very early and desirable. Small 4to in a handsome contemporary binding of three-quarter dark-blue morocco over blue cloth boards the spine divided by bands ruled in gilt one compartment lettered in gilt. The original blue wrappers printed in white as issued by Shakespeare and Company in Paris are bound in at the front and back. 6 735 pp. A very desirable copy in contemporary binding the paper still quite fresh and all very sturdy and sound. A handsome book with only light evidence of age. ONE OF THE KEY PRINTINGS BY SYLVIA BEACH’S SHAKESPEARE AND COMPANY OF THIS LANDMARK OF 20th CENTURY LITERATURE. It is the first reprinting of the work to use entirely reset type. The work was accomplished with Joyce’s participation. The copy is bound as is often found on printings of the period in a simple style designed to draw little attention to itself due the controversy of the text within. In all a highly collectable copy.
Burgess as well pronounced it the greatest single work in the English literature of the century and he was not alone in that opinion. At the beginning of the present century the Modern Library placed ULYSSES in the number one spot on their 100 best books of the 20th century list. Shakespeare and Company hardcover

Paris Tokyo: Shakespeare and Company Yushodo/Inkpen Press 1922 2001. A very finely produced facsimile of the first edition of Ulysses LIMITED to 120 copies. The facsimile is printed on fine paper by the Inkpen Press. Large thick 8vo 195 x 235 mm beautifully hand-bound in full crushed blue morocco the spine handsomely lettered in gilt housed in a blue moire cloth slipcase. 10 732 2 pp. A mint pristine and superb copy. A BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED FACSIMILE OF THE FIRST EDITION OF JAMES JOYCE’S ULYSSES the most important novel of the twentieth century . The true first edition of this book is now beyond the range of all but a very small handful of collectors this facsimile provides the opportunity to own this important and handsome work in a format and with the feel of the first edition.
Burgess as well pronounced it the greatest single work in the English literature of the last century and he is not alone in that opinion.
According to James Spoerri "This fortunate combination of printer and publisher resulted in the appearance of ULYSSES as a book whose physical aspect is particularly suited to its content. It is a fat and inviting volume the blue and white of its covers subtly evocative of the Greece whose epic it so closely parallels" quoted in the catalogue for the Garden Sale Sotheby's 1989. While this facsimile is of course not the true first edition the physical attributes are the same. [Shakespeare and Company ], Yushodo/Inkpen Press hardcover
