Eugene Ionesco - An Original Painting by Peter Kettle
FINDING THE SCARAB
Eugene Ionesco wrote Rhinoceros a play considered to be a masterpiece of the Theatre of the Absurd in which the inhabitants of a small provincial French town turn into rhinos. The only human who does not succumb to this is the central character and the play is often read as a response to the upsurge of totalitarianism. The play explores themes of conformity culture philosophy and morality. Peter Kettle painted this large image - 18"x35" - in response to the plays themes. He imagined a sculptor intending to create a monumental image of a rhinoceros beetle. The exquisite beetle is perched on a copy of the book and seemingly looking at the crude carving with contempt. Thus the viewer is taken a further step towards absurdity. Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng. Signed by Author. No Binding. New. unknown

Journeys Among the Dead
New York: The Limited Editions Club 1987. First Thus 1st Printing. Soft cover. As New/Publishers Slipcase. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. This edition consists of one thousand copied of which this is #539. The four wonderful surreal lithographs were drawn by the author Ionesco and were printed on Fabriano 'Unbria' by Erker Presse Franz larese and Jurg Janett in St. Gallen Switzerland. The paper was made at Cartiere Enrico Magnani in Pescia Italy. The book is unread and unmarked and except to photograph it's contents unopened. The Book is bound in fine creme parchment as is the printed jacket. The velvet lined slip case is bound in the same parchment except for the top and bottom edge which is fine red Morocco leather. The book starts with a conversation between Eugene Ionesco and Verena Heyden-Rumsch in paris in 1987 which has been translated by Barbara Wright. Ionesco has been quoted as saying about this and other plays and writings " My sole concern is the constant attempt to split apart the veil of appearances." In this play which is a journey to the extremities of death has the veil of appearances not been completely split have we not arrived on the other side- the side of truth asks Heyden-Rumsch." No we are caught up in that split." states Ionesco. A wonderful and fascinating look at a modern almost abstract master of modern literature. A Rare and collectible copy signed by Ionesco.

The Limited Editions Club paperback

Notes and Counter Notes - Eugene Ionesco
John Calder. Hardcover. Good. Eugne Ionesco was for many years the central figure of The Theatre of the Absurd" This book contains his own ideas about the theatre and in a series of essays explores his feelings about his plays recovers correspondence with critics e.g. Kenneth Tynan Philip Toynbee reproduces interviews he had given and describes why he wrote plays at all. A fascinating collection of erudite short pieces granting insights into the theatre of the sixties. Originally published by Gallimard as "Notes et contre-notes" this is the first translation. A good clean hardback copy complete with dust jacket. The dust jacket has some bumping and some small tears to it inside the pages are clean bright and well bound looks like it has hardly been read.
