THE DEVILS OF LOUDUN
London: Chatto & Windus 1952. 1st Edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition hardcover 8.00 x 5.50" 20.50 x 13.0 cm orange cloth with gilt lettering on a brown label on the spine. The top pages edges are stained brown with the original dust jacket signed 'Bird' 376 pp. Stylistically balancing between non-fiction and fiction this is Huxley's account of a historical event of demonic possession in 1634 of the Ursuline nuns by Urbain Grandier who was then prosecuted by Cardinal Richelieu. The book is in great shape binding and all except for a slight discoloration on the first two front free end papers. HUXLEY, Aldous
The Devils of Loudun
New York: Harper & Brothers 1953. Hardcover. Very Good. Reprint. Light stain on a couple of pages modest wear at the spine ends near very good lacking the dustwrapper. With the bookplate of the important rocket scientist and influential science-fiction fan John Drury Clark the bookplate has one corner folded under. In addition to writing an important book on rocket propulsion as well as a couple of stories in "Astounding Stories" Clark was also instrumental in revitalizing and promoting the career of Robert E. Howard. He was college roommates with L. Sprague de Camp who he encouraged to write science fiction stories introduced de Camp to his sometime co-writer Fletcher Pratt and eventually married Pratt's widow Inga. His previous marriage prompted Pratt to form a club of science fiction writers and scientists called The Trap Door Spiders so that they wouldn't have to socialize with Clark's first wife. Isaac Asimov later fictionalized the club as a group of mystery solvers The Black Widowers. Harper & Brothers hardcover

HUXLEY, Aldous (1894-1963)
The Doors of Perception
London: Chatto and Windus 1954. Literature FIRST EDITION first impression. Octavo 19 x 13cm pp.63 1. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine. Internally crisp and clean with toning to spine and board edges. Near fine. Huxley's distress at what he regarded as the spiritual bankruptcy of the modern world led him towards mysticism and the use of hallucinatory drugs. This exploratory essay in which he describes the use of mescaline to induce visionary states of mind sparked a generation of drug experimentation and it continues to challenge beliefs about the drugs condoned and forbidden in society. Like his contemporaries D.H. Lawrence and George Orwell Huxley abhorred conformity and denounced the orthodox attitudes of his time. The enormous range of his intellect and the pungency of his writing make him one of the most significant voices of the early 20th century. Book Collector No.287 p32-62 'The Sixties'.
