Il s'inspire d'événements réels et de personnages historiques. En 1634, l'abbé Urbain Grandier, chef politique et religieux de la ville fortifiée de Loudun, est accusé par les soeurs d'un couvent d'Ursulines de les avoir ensorcelées. Il sera condamné à être brulé vif. On trouve, dans ce livre, des réflexions attachantes sur la sorcellerie au XVIIe siècle, sur la psychologie occidentale avant Descartes, sur la nature de la "possession" diabolique, sur la pratique de la vie spirituelle. Les Diables de Loudun narre aussi, en même temps que le procès et le supplice d'Urbain Grandier, le destin du père Surin, élève du renommé père Lallemant, qui prônait alors aux jeunes jésuites une nouvelle spiritualité très austère, orientée sur le renoncement et la docilité au Saint-Esprit. Désigné comme exorciseur de la soeur Jeanne des Anges, il devint la victime du diable alors qu'il aurait dû en être le bourreau. Trop fragile, le père Surin ne supportera pas les séances d'exorcismes spectaculaires, ces cérémonies publiques qui durent des heures, où les curieux se pressent pour voir ces religieuses se laisser docilement attacher puis se livrer brusquement aux folles contorsions que leur inspire le diable. Il finit à son tour "possédé" par le Malin et côtoya vingt ans durant la folie.
