Thomas Henry Huxley PC FRS HonFRSE FLS. 1825�1895 was an English biologist and anthropologist specialising in comparative anatomy. He is known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Huxley had little formal schooling and was virtually self-taught. He became perhaps the finest comparative anatomist of the later 19th century.7 He worked on invertebrates clarifying relationships between groups previously little understood. Later he worked on vertebrates especially on the relationship between apes and humans. After comparing Archaeopteryx with Compsognathus he concluded that birds evolved from small carnivorous dinosaurs a theory widely accepted today. The tendency has been for this fine anatomical work to be overshadowed by his energetic and controversial activity in favour of evolution and by his extensive public work on scientific education both of which had significant effects on society in Britain and elsewhere Wikipedia. George John Douglas Campbell 8th Duke of Argyll KG KT PC FRS FRSE 1823�1900 styled Marquess of Lorne until 1847 was a Scottish peer and Liberal politician as well as a writer on science religion and the politics of the 19th century Wikipedia. The Metaphysical Society existed between 1868 and 1880 and was the creation of James Knowles the publisher of the Nineteenth Century journal. Many of the early contributors to The Nineteenth Century were members of the Metaphysical Society. The journal was intended to publish debate by leading intellectuals. In 1901 the title was changed to The Nineteenth Century and After. Its interests were the belief in science immortality of the soul morality miracles Christianity etc. Explaining the demise of the Metaphysical Society Tennyson remarked it was because after ten years of strenuous effort no one had succeeded in even defining metaphysics whilst according to Dean Stanley 'We all meant the same thing if we only knew it'. A very good clean neat and sturdy hard cover overall with minor shelf wear at the extremities interior hinges and binding solid paper lightly yellowed with a few pages dog-eared. This is the publisher's edition printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material articles stories poetry etc. of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers but has been re-bound by the library. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. Note: ''Harper's Magazine' began publication in 1850 and recreated the American magazine serving as a promotional vehicle for Harper and Brothers books as well as the new 'literary' fiction and essay of the time using sophisticated illustration and the best authors.
