‎London: Chatto & Windus 1939. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First English Edition. 314 pp. Pale brown boards with gold lettering on the spine only. There is a tiny ding on the top spine. "A Hollywood millionaire with a terror of death whose personal physician happens to be working on a theory of longevity - these are the elements of Aldous Huxley's caustic and entertaining satire on man's desire to live indefinitely.Huxley pursues his characters in their quest for the eternal finishing on a note of horror. Written soon after Huxley left England and settled in California the novel is his examination of American culture particularly what he saw as its narcissism superficiality and obsession with youth. It also raises pertinent philosophical and social issues." Size: Octavo. Chatto & Windus Hardcover‎

‎Harper & Brothers New York 1939 Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Clay colored textured cloth on boards with gilt linings and blue title label to front and spine. Book is tight slight spine slant sharp-cornered and Very Good. No jacket. Stated as Tenth Edition on copyright page but only date is 1939. Code B-P. First US edition. 356 pp. octavo original maroon cloth. The story has been interpreted as contemptuous nod to the Hearstian reality of the United States in the early part of the 20th century: Jo Stoyte is an allegory for William Randolph Hearst by his acquisitions of art etc. and living in an opulent estatesimilar to Hearst Castlewith Virginia who can be taken as a parody of Marion Davies. Orson Welles may have been inspired by this novelafter RKO Radio Pictures rejected Welles's two earlier ideas for scriptsto write the screenplay for Citizen Kane with Herman Mankiewicz although their screenplay is very different from the novel. The novel won Huxley the 1939 James Tait Black Memorial Prize which boosted sales. This was the first book Huxley published after moving to California. American readers were fascinated it was his Hollywood novel skewering U.S. wealth immortality obsessions and LA culture. That made it especially marketable in the States. While Harper didnt announce exact numbers typical serious novels of the late 1930s might have 20005000 copies per printing. Ten printings could easily mean 2500040000 copies sold in the first year a strong commercial showing for a literary novel at the time. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. With darkened strips to the endpapers and toning to the pages else very fresh. In the dust jacket which is torn in half. The story of a Hollywood millionaire who fears his approaching death. Originally published in the UK this novel was published later the same year in the United States under the title "After Many a Summer Dies the Swan."<br /> <br /> From the dust jacket-<br /> <br /> "Central to this extravaganza is the story at once grotesque and painful farcical and reflective of an attempt to prolong the span of human life. But in terms of this rather nightmarish tale of the adventures of a rich man terrified of death the book treats of the ultimate topics of all philosophy- bondage and liberation reality and illusion the problem of good the nature of evil and finally of course causality the great empirical fact that God is not mocked together with that other empirical fact that men are for ever trying to mock God with results that are invariably disastrous. ‎Huxley, Aldous‎

‎Along The Road Notes and Essays of a Tourist‎

‎New York: George H. Doran 1925. Very Good in the publisher's brown paper-covered boards half-bound in ivory vellum. Burgundy leather spine-label gilt-stamped. Top-edge gilt. 266pps. Neither the rare dustjacket nor the slipcase are present. There is modest sunning and wear in the area of the spine. The boards have light touches of soiling. Internally there is some browning to the endpapers and a previous owner's unassuming namestamp is near the top of the ffep and again on the rear pastedown; there is a spot of browning also on pgs 178-179 from where a newspaper clipping had been laid in. The binding is slightly brittle though sound with all pages intact. Other than the aforementioned minor flaw to page 178 the text is in excellent clean condition. One of 250 copies SIGNED by Huxley on a limitation page. ".Some people travel on business some in search of health. But it is neither the sickly nor the men of affairs who fill the Grand Hotels and the pockets of their proprietors. It is those who travel 'for pleasure' as the phrase goes. What Epicurus who never travelled except when he was banished sought in his own garden our tourists seek abroad. And do they find their happiness Those who freqeuent the places where they resort must often find this question with a tentative answer in the negative fairly forced upon them. For tourists are in the main a very gloomy-looking tribe. I have seen much brighter faces at a funeral than in the Piazza of St. Mark's. Only when they can band together and pretend for a brief precarious hour that they are at home do the majority of tourists look really happy. One wonders why they come abroad. The face is that very few travellers really like travelling. If they go to the trouble and expense of travelling it is not so much from curiosity for fun or because they like to see things beautiful and strange as out of a kind of snobbery. People travel for the same reason as they collect works of art: because the best people do it. To have been to certain spots on the earth's surface is socially correct; and having been there one is superior to those who have not." -- from the quite witty and splendid opening. Purchase with confidence: all books gradings and descriptions are rendered the care of a genuine bibliophile. Satisfaction guaranteed or all costs you've incurred will be promptly refunded.
