ASTOUNDING - Science Fiction - Volume 49 number 3 - May 1952
New York: Street and Smith 1952. 170 pp. Digest format. Edge and corner wear with some creasing on the covers. Cover art by H. R. Van Dongen. This issue contains: Blood's a Rover - a novelette by Chad Oliver; Fast Falls the Eventide by Eric Frank Russell; What Have I Done by Mark Clifton; Half the Victory by Brian Parker; Gunner Cade - the conclusion by Cyril Judd C. M. Kornbluth and Judith Merril; and Brookhaven Action - an exploration of the Brookhaven National Laboratory for Advanced Nuclear Physics by John W. Campbell Jr; along with the usual features including John W. Campbell's editorial: Aristotelian Thinking. Astounding Stories started in January 1930. The original publisher went broke in 1933 while the magazine was being edited by Harry Bates. Street and Smith took over then with F. Orlin Tremaine at the helm. At that point the magazine had some major success. In 1937 John W. Campbell took over as editor. And some of the greatest sf writers ever were being published there: Isaac Asimov; A E. van Vogt; Robert A. Heinlein. the list goes on like a Who's Who of early Science Fiction. Campbell had never been fond of the magazine's name but it wasn't until 1960 that he changed the title to Analog Science Fiction & Fact; he had long wanted to get rid of the word Astounding in the title which he felt was too sensational. At about the same time Conde Nast took over the magazine. Campbell remained as editor until his death in 1971. And the magazine is still going strong today. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good-. Illus. by H. R. Van Dongen;. 12mo. Street and Smith Paperback

van Vogt A. E.
THE WEAPON SHOPS OF ISHER
New York: Ace Books 1969. 156 pp. Ace Book 87855. Lightly rubbed on the corners with minor creasing on the spine; no interior markings. Alfred Elton van Vogt was the guy drinking beer in the bar with L. Ron Hubbard when Hubbard declared that writing science fiction for a penny a word was no way to get rich - the best way to get rich would be to start a new religion. And he did. And he got rich with that new religion - Dianetics - Scientology. Scientologists everywhere deny that Hubbard ever said any such thing of course. All van Vogt got out of the deal was a job running a bookstore for Hubbard. Imagine an empire of the far future dictatorial proud all-conquering whose citizens could defy it at will by merely entering a store and buying a gun. Sound familiar The guns would be super weapons that the Empire couldn't duplicate or defeat the the stores would be impregnable fortresses open to everyong except soldiers and policemen. That's the situation of The Weapon Shops of Isher. First Printing - First Thus. Paperback. Very Good. Illus. by John Schoenerr;. Ace Books Paperback

ASTOUNDING - Volume 63 number 3 - May 1959
New York: Street and Smith 1959. 162 pp. Digest format. Edge and corner wear with some creasing on the spine; initialled by a previous owner on the first page. Cover art by H. R. Van Dongen. This issue contains: Dorsai - Part One of Three Parts by Gordon R. Dickson; Novelettes: Cum Grano Salis by David Gordon; Operation Haystack by Frank Herbert; Hex by Larry M. Harris; Short Stories: We Didn't Do Anything Wrong Hardly by Roger Kuykendall; History Repeats by George O. Smith; and Disturbing Sun by Philip Latham; along with the usual features including John W. Campbell's editorial: Mr Newton's Wonderful Discovery.

Alfred Elton van Vogt was the guy drinking beer in a bar with L. All van Vogt got out of the deal was a job running a bookstore for Hubbard. The Slans were a super-race capable of mind reading and equipped with bodies many times more resistant to fatigue than ordinary mortals.
