Loudon Jane Mrs. Webb Jane
The Mummy ! A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century
London: Henry Colburn 1828. Second edition. Three volumes small octavo pp viii 309; 331; 311 half calf and marbled boards very slightly scuffed the spines a little faded. The first and last few pages in each volume suffer from foxing see illustration but otherwise the contents are remarkably clean and tight. One volume contains a signature on the first blank. The binding is by James Clyde which dates it perhaps twenty years later than the books as Clyde was the foreman to the long established firm of Herings and took over their business and premises in 1845. A rare early fantasy novel. It was written anonymously. John Claudius Loudon reviewed it ecstacially and eventually invited the author to lunch no doubt assuming it was a man. Seven months later he and Jane Webb were married ! The novel though difficult to read nowadays includes predictions of an early internet espresso machines steam-ploughs and air-conditioning. Second edition. Half Leather. Very Good. Henry Colburn Hardcover

Campbell John W. editor Murray Leinster; Calvin M. Knox; John A. Sentry; Peter Baily; Frank Herbert; Leonard Lockhard
ASTOUNDING - Science Fiction - Volume 62 number 6 - February 1959
New York: Street and Smith Publications 1959. 162 pp. Digest format. Light wear but with a small date stamp on the front cover. Cover art by Kelly Freas; interior drawings by Kelly Freas Schoenherr Summers and H. R. van Dongen. This issue contains: Novelette: Hi Diddle Diddle by Calvin M. Knox. Short Stories: The Stoker and the Stars by John A. Sentry; Accidental Death by Peter Baily; Missing Link by Frank Herbert. Serial: The Pirates of Ersatz - part one of three parts by Murray Leinster. And Article: The Professional Touch by Leonard Lockhard; along with the usual features including John W. Campbell's editorial: Non Escape Literature. Astounding Stories started in January 1930. The original publisher went broke in 1933 while the magazine was being edited by Harry Bates. Street and Smith took over then with F. Orlin Tremaine at the helm. At that point the magazine had some major success. In 1937 John W. Campbell took over as editor. And some of the greatest sf writers ever were being published there: Isaac Asimov; A E. van Vogt; Robert A. Heinlein. the list goes on like a Who's Who of early Science Fiction. Campbell had never been fond of the magazine's name but it wasn't until 1960 that he changed the title to Analog Science Fiction & Fact; he had long wanted to get rid of the word Astounding in the title which he felt was too sensational. At about the same time Conde Nast took over the magazine. Campbell remained as editor until his death in 1971. And the magazine is still going strong today. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good. Illus. by Kelly Freas;. 12mo. Street and Smith Publications Paperback

Campbell John W. editor E. B. Cole; Chad Oliver; Robert Abernathy; Joseph Whitehill; Hal Lynch; Wallace West; Murray Leinster
ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION - Volume 53 number 2 - April 1954
New York: Street and Smith 1954. 162 pp. Digest format. Edge and corner wear with a crease on the front hinge; no interior markings. Cover art by Kelly Freas; interiors by Freas Doore and van Dongen. This issue contains: Novelettes: Fighting Philosopher by E. B. Cole; Rite of Passage by Chad Oliver; The Thousandth Year by Robert Abernathy. Short Stories: Marshmallow World by Joseph Whitehill; Age of Retirement by Hal Lynch. And Articles: Washday Minus Zero by Wallace West; and To Build a Robot Brain by Murray Leinster; followed by the usual features including the John W. Campbell editorial: Information on Age and a somewhat lengthy letter from Poul Anderson in Brass Tacks. Soft Cover. Very Good. Illus. by Kelly Freas; Doore; van Dongen;. 12mo. Street and Smith Paperback
