‎Candide‎

‎ABOUT THE BOOK:- Candide begins in the German town of Westphalia, where Candide, a young man, lives in the castle of Baron of Thunder - ten- tronckh. A noted philosopher, Doctor Pangloss, tutors the baron on philosophical optimism. Candide, a simple man, first accepts this philosophy, but as he experiences the horrors of war, poverty, the maliciousness of man, and the hypocrisy of the Church, he begins to doubt the voracity of Pangloss’s theory. Thus, philosophical optimism is the focus of Voltaire’s Satire; anti-war and antichurch refrains also run throughout the novel. Candide makes his way to a neighbouring town, where he is aided by two soldiers. He is pressed into service and endures beating at the hands of his superiors. He was slapped in every direction by fate. In Paris, Candide becomes ill and is attended by a variety of people, all of whom want a piece of his fortune. He recovers, but is tricked by an actress into giving away much of his fortune and is eventually arrested by the police. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- Francois – Marie Arouet (Voltaire) (1694 - 1778) was a French Enlightenment writer, historian and Philosopher, famous for his wit, his attacks on the established Catholic Church, and his advocacy of freedom of religion, freedom of speech and separation of Church and state. Voltaire was a versatile writer, producing works in almost every literary form, including plays, poems, novels, essays, historical and scientific works. He wrote more than 20,000 letters and more than 2000 books and pamphlets. He was an outspoken advocate of civil liberties, despite the risk this placed him in under the script censorship laws of the time. Voltair’s best known histories are “The Age of Louis (1751), and his “Essay on the customs and the spirit of the nation (1756). He broke from the tradition of narrating diplomatic and military events, and emphasised customs, social history and achievements in the arts and sciences. ‎The Santaroga Barrier‎

‎Rapp & Whiting UK 1970. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/Good. Hardcover. 255 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Rapp & Whiting UK 1970. First Edition. This is the first UK edition. CONDITION: The book itself is in good condition and comes in good dust jacket. More specifically: Corners of boards are lightly bumped. Spine has moderate lean. Dust jacket has light creasing. Edges of dust jacket have moderate wear. The dust jacket has been price-clipped. Pages are lightly tanned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Santaroga seemed to be nothing more than a prosperous farm community. But there was something . . . different . . . about Santaroga. Santaroga had no juvenile delinquency or any crime at all. Outsiders found no house for sale or rent in this valley and no one ever moved out. No one bought cigarettes in Santaroga. No cheese wine beer or produce from outside the valley could be sold there. The list went on and on and grew stranger and stranger. Maybe Santaroga was the last outpost of American individualism. Maybe they were just a bunch of religious kooks. . . . Or maybe there was something extraordinary at work in Santaroga. Something far more disturbing than anyone could imagine. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Science Fiction & Fantasy; ISBN: 0853911592. CONDITION: This book is in good condition. More specifically: Covers have no creasing. Corners of covers are moderately bumped. Spine has mild fading. . Pages are lightly tanned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: In the endless war between East and West oil has become the ultimate prize. Nuclear-powered subtugs brave enemy waters to tap into hidden oil reserves beneath the East's continental shelf. But the last twenty missions have never returned. Have sleeper agents infiltrated the elite submarine service or are the crews simply cracking under the pressure Psychologist John Ramsay has gone undercover aboard a Hell Diver subtug. His mission is to covertly observe the remainder of the four-man crew - and find the traitor among them. Sabotage and suspicion soon plague the mission as Ramsay discovers that the stress of fighting a war a mile and a half under the ocean exposes every weakness in a man. Hunted relentlessly by the enemy the four men find themselves isolated in a claustrophobic undersea prison struggling for survival against the elements . . . and themselves. Quantity Available: 1.
