‎Life in a Thousand Worlds‎

‎Cleona PA: G. Holzapfel Sole Manufacturer 1905. "Life in a Thousand Worlds" by the Rev. W.S. Harris" is a very rare example of early American science fiction. This is a first edition published in 1905 by G. Holzapfel of Cleona Pa. "by subscription only." It is in Very Good Plus condition. Click on photo. The book has light rubbing at the spine tips and corners. It has a light blue pictorial cloth with two small figures pointing to the stars with the front panel drawing stamped in dark blue and gold and the spine panel stamped in gold. It is illustrated with 19 b&w plates depicting fantastical life on other planets. The binding is tight and secure and the pages are bright and sparkling throughout. Since the author was a minister the book is a bizarre combination of science fiction theology and speculation of life in the future. This highly imaginative entertaining work explores Moonites Jupiterites high-tech inventions future laws and societies. It describes the inhabitants and institutions of twenty-one other worlds including Heaven in and beyond our solar system visited by a narrator who transports himself at will through the cosmos. You can find reference to this early work in the following books that trace the history of science fiction: Bleiler Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1050. The most dynamic fiction of our time science fiction is also the fastest-expanding both in readership and in the range of authors who employ it. The established masters--mostly American a few Englishmen--continue to show the way. The established outlets--American s-f magazines mostly some original book anthologies--continue to provide most of its nurture. But faithful reading of a handful of American publications is no longer sufficient to keep up with the most exciting work being done. Harry Harrison and Brian W. Aldiss have established this series as definitive in the field by looking much further afield. This year's selection is built around the established sources but includes also a brilliant tale by the Brazilian Andre Carneiro; an astonishing and delightful story by a young Ghanaian Victor Sabah; and other unexpected pleasures.
