Comme toujours, les planches hors texte sont uniformément brunies. — Edition originale de ce roman d'anticipation précurseur des dystopies du XXe siècle. Emile Souvestre est un des premiers écrivains à construire une utopie dans laquelle la technique est au centre de la cité et façonne l’organisation sociale. Une société où l'individualisme est devenu la loi, où la recherche du profit motive toutes les relations humaines et qui exhibe, gravée à l'entrée des maisons, sa devise provocatrice : "Chacun chez soi, chacun pour soi". Tel est le tableau menaçant qu'Emile Souvestre dresse de l'an 3000, dans ce Monde tel qu'il sera. Le plaisir de la lecture du roman d'anticipation de Souvestre tient aussi à l'humour et au dynamisme d'une écriture qui enchaîne les scènes comiques et satiriques. — "Dès le siècle dernier, les écrivains qui se sont souciés de passer la tête par-dessus le mur du présent, balancent entre fiction et essai et lorsqu'ils affectent de préférer la forme romanesque, l'adoptent souvent par habitude ou pour mieux retenir le chaland, et ne se soucient pas toujours de l'exploiter vraiment.
