The French title is untranslatable as such - a place where people go purely to get knocked out hammered out of it - none of the couthy convivial quaffing suggested by this quaintly translated title. Otherwise this is a rare jacketed version of the unexpurgated 1951 translation with a useful introduction by Alan Hodge. There are no marks or inscriptions. Some foxing/spotting but clean cloth covers. The jacket is largely intact not price clipped but some old tape marks. Edges sunned.</p> . Hamish Hamilton unknown

It was originally translated into English in 1888 by publisher Henry Vizetelly who was imprisoned for obscene libel the same year for his translation of Zola's 'The Soil'.
