Emile Zola; Guy de Maupassant; Joris-Karl Huysmans; Henri Ceard; Leon Hennique; Paul Alexis
Les Soirees de Medan
Paris: Fasquelle Editeurs 1930. Paperback. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 6". None. A wonderful example of this 50th anniversary edition of 'Les Soirees de Medan'. With an important association to the movement of naturalism. From the library of Lucien Descaves. A large paper copy of this fiftieth anniversary edition with an preface by Leon Hennique. Signed by the publisher Fasquelle to the edition page. This special edition was signed for the French novelist Lucien Descaves. Signed to the verso of title page to Monsieur Lucien Descaves from Fasquelle. Descaves was one of the "Manifeste des Cinq' authors who following the initial publication of this work accused Zola of having deserted the naturalist camp abandoning his troops and betraying his own oeuvre Whidden Seth p.108. In French. Loosely inserted is an inscribed note by the hand of Descaves in French. The note regards the 'Evenings of Medan' lunch hosted on May 3 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this work. A menu card for the event is also inserted. A portrait of Charles Del Fosse is loosely inserted. With a portrait frontispiece of all six contributors. Paul Alexis has signed above his image. This work contains tales of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and some critics explain also tells the tale of the campaign of naturalism. It is considered by some to be a manifesto of naturalism. This work was important as a means to promote and defend naturalism by presenting a united front. There are five contributors in addition to Emile Zola: J.K Huysmans Henry Ceard Leon Hennique Paul Alexis Maupassant and Paul Alexis. The six authors are often referred to as the 'Medan Group'. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally very smart. A few light marks to the wraps. Internally binding is tender in places due to the binding type. Pages are bright. Offsetting to page 130. Some of the gatherings remain unopened to the top edge. Otherwise just the odd spot. Very Good Indeed Fasquelle Editeurs paperback

Paris 1896. Fine. Paris 16 décembre 1896 13.50 x 20.50 cm 1 page et demi sur un bifeuillet Autograph letter signed by Emile Zola addressed to the actress Marie Laurent dated in his hand December 16 1896. One and a half pages in black ink on a bifolium. Traces of horizontal and vertical folds inherent to the mailing. Trace of violet ink in left outer margin of first leaf not touching text. Published in his Correspondance ed. Bard H. Bakker Colette Becker October 1893-September 1897 p. 371. Zola attempts to help the actress Marie Laurent who created the role of Thérèse Raquin on stage and encounters the refusal of Fernand de Rodays administrator of Le Figaro. President of the Orphelinat des Arts the actress Marie Laurent had solicited the writer to support the publication of an article about the charitable work in the columns of Le Figaro. Veuillez me croire quand même chère Madame votre fidèle et dévoué"" ""Dear Madam I have no good news to give you. M. de Rodays did not even let me finish and he declared that he was resolved not to publish any article about the Orphelinat des Arts in Le Figaro. It was impossible for me even to insist faced with his formal prejudice. I would have been very happy to be agreeable to you and I regret the obstacle that prevents me. I repeat any insistence is useless. Please believe me nonetheless dear Madam your faithful and devoted"" Fine letter from Emile Zola to the actress who according to the writer ""véritablement créé le rôle de Madame Raquin . c'est elle qui a trouvé tout cet admirable personnage du quatrième acte cette haute figure du châtiment implacable et muet ces deux yeux vivants cloués sur les coupables et les poursuivant jusque dans l'agonie."" ""truly created the role of Madame Raquin . it is she who found all this admirable character of the fourth act this lofty figure of implacable and mute punishment these two living eyes fixed on the guilty and pursuing them even unto agony."" Emile ZOLA - (Georges GILLES DE LA TOURETTE)
Lettre autographe datée et signée adressée à son ami le médecin Maurice de Fleury • Autograph letter dated and signed addressed to his friend the doctor Maurice de Fleury
Paris 1893. Fine. Paris 15 octobre 1893 13.50 x 20.50 cm une page 1/4 sur un bifeuillet Autograph letter dated and signed by Emile Zola addressed to his friend the physician Maurice de Fleury dated in his hand October 15 1893. 1 page 1/4 19 lines in black ink on a double sheet. Transverse folds inherent to mailing. Stain on verso not affecting the text.Stain on verso not affecting the text. A most unusual invitation from the master of Naturalism who wishes to organize a luncheon with these two eminent specialists in nervous diseases: ""Vous êtes bien aimable de m'inviter à déjeuner. ""You are very kind to invite me to lunch. But this will make you lose time and me as well . why wouldn't you make an appointment for two-thirty for example with M. Gille de la Tourette either Thursday or Friday. We would go to his place simply ."" Zola relied on the expertise and scientific knowledge of Maurice de Fleury a student of Charcot to nourish his writing work on the Rougon-Macquart. De Fleury particularly shared publications from his library relating to heredity a subject at the heart of Zola's great social fresco - most particularly the generational transmission of nervous diseases fits of violence and alcoholism. Maurice de Fleury is also famous for having made ten years after this letter a medico-psychological study of Zola himself through the prism of his working habits: ""De dix heures à midi Zola rédige encore - moins facilement et moins bien que pendant l'heure initiale - et c'est fini pour toute la journée il ne sera plus bon qu'à écrire des lettres. From ten o'clock to noon Zola still writes - less easily and less well than during the initial hour - and it's finished for the whole day he will only be good for writing letters. This is the power of the most powerful brain in the literary domain at the end of the century. With this very modest little routine three hours a day in two sessions this man whose attention is modest . manages to give us every ten months one of those books which lack neither the solidity of the framework . nor anything that constitutes creative force genius to say the word"".
Paris 1891. Fine. Paris 22 octobre 1891 13.30 x 20.50 cm une page sur un bifeuillet Autograph letter dated and signed by Emile Zola addressed to his friend the physician Maurice de Fleury dated in his hand October 22 1891. 16 lines in black ink on one page. ""Mon cher de Fleury je crois bien que j'ai trouvé quelque chose pour le supplément du Figaro. Venez donc causer entre cinq et dix heures . Si vous étiez au Théâtre libre samedi soir je songe que nous pourrions en causer dans un entr'acte ce qui vous éviterait de vous déranger ."" ""My dear de Fleury I do believe I have found something for the Figaro supplement. Do come to chat between five and ten o'clock . If you were at the Théâtre Libre Saturday evening I think we could discuss it during an intermission which would save you the trouble of making a special trip ."". Fleury indeed held the medical column at Le Figaro - it is perhaps following this letter and their ""conversations"" that Fleury writes these lines in the supplement of October 31 1891: ""toute l'école naturaliste ayant fait de la médecine les médecins logiquement ont fait de la littérature"" ""the entire naturalist school having practiced medicine doctors logically have practiced literature"". Zola relied on the expertise and scientific knowledge of Maurice de Fleury a student of Charcot to nourish his writing work on the Rougon-Macquart.
