Reliure à la bradel en demi maroquin bleu marine, dos lisse, pièce de titre de maroquin bordeaux, plats de papier marbré, gardes et contreplats de papier à la cuve, tranches mouchetées, ex-libris encollé sur un contreplat, reliure signée de Kauffmann. Précieux envoi autographe signé de Guy de Maupassant : «À mon aimable cousine Lucie Le Poittevin et à mon cher cousin, beau-fils de Cornudet lui-même, leur bien dévoué...» Notre exemplaire est enrichi de deux billets manuscrits et signés de Léon Hennique et Henri Céard. Ce véritable manifeste du Naturalisme que constituent Les Soirées de Médan se compose de six nouvelles, «L'Attaque du moulin» d'Émile Zola, «Sac au dos» de J.-K. Huysmans, «La Saignée» d'Henry Céard, «L'Affaire du grand 7» de Léon Hennique, «Après la bataille» de Paul Alexis, et bien sûr, «Boule de Suif» de Guy de Maupassant. Qualifiée de chef-d'uvrepar Gustave Flaubert, cette nouvelle est tirée d'une anecdote contée à Maupassant par son oncle, Charles Cord'Homme. Plus encore, celui-ci inspire au jeune écrivain Cornudet, le personnage masculin principal de «Boule de Suif». L'envoi de Maupassant confirme cette influence dans l'hommage qu'il rend à son cousin et confident, Louis-Paul Le Poittevin, beau-fils de Charles Cord'Homme alias Cornudet. Cet envoi est mentionné par Armand Lanoux dans son ouvrage Maupassant le Bel Ami: «Boule de Suif n'est pas sorti de l'imagination du conteur. Le modèle d'Elisabeth Rousset s'appelait Adrienne Legay. Charles Cord'Homme l'avait connue avant 1870. Il s'en défendra plus tard, mais il ne pouvait effacer, entre autres la dédicace faite par Maupassant à ses cousins Louis et Lucie Le Poittevin, ce dernier présenté comme beau-fils de Cornudet lui-même.» Guy de Maupassant séjourna à de nombreuses reprises à La Neuville - la propriété normande des Le Poittevin -, notamment à l'occasion de ses 30 ans en août 1880, quatre mois après la publication desSoirées de Médan. C'est très vraisemblablement lors de cette visite qu'il leur offrit ce recueil. Dans son édition de la Correspondance inédite de Maupassant, Artine Artinian souligne: «Les rapports de Maupassant avec ses cousins Le Poittevin sont ceux d'une ancienne, franche et cordiale amitié.» À l'occasion du mariage de Louis et Lucie en 1869, l'écrivain avait en effet prédit à son cousin: «Je serai si tu veux l'ami de ton ménage.» L'un et l'autre furent de véritables confidents, en témoigne leur correspondance, et en 1884, Maupassant ira jusqu'à vivre quelques temps dans leur hôtel particulier rue Montchanin à Paris. Belle démonstration de l'attachement profond de Maupassant à sa famille maternelle.
