Oscar Fingal O'Fflahertie Wills Wilde 16 October 1854 – 30 November 1900 was an Irish author poet and playwright. After writing in different literary styles throughout the 1880s he became one of the most popular and influential dramatists in London in the early 1890s. He was a key figure in the emerging Aestheticism movement of the late 19th century and is regarded by many as the greatest playwright of the Victorian era. Wilde is best known for his Gothic novel The Picture of Dorian Gray 1890 his epigrams plays and bedtime stories for children. Leonard B. Lubin 1943-1994 was an artist who worked prominently in children's books illustrating such titles as The Perfect Peach by Stephen Schwartz 1982 Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp 1982 Sing a Song of Sixpence 1987 Christmas Gift-Bringers 1989 and the second and third books in the Rats of NIMH series by Jane Leslie Conly. It was the birthday of the Infanta. She was just twelve years of age and the sun was shining brightly in the gardens of the palace. Although she was a real Princess and the Infanta of Spain she had only one birthday every year just like the children of quite poor people so it was naturally a matter of great importance to the whole country that she should have a really fine day for the occasion. And a really fine day it certainly was. "The Birthday of the Infanta" is a historical fiction short story for children by the Irish author Oscar Wilde. It was first published in the 1891 anthology House of Pomegranates which also includes "The Young King' "The Fisherman and his Soul" and "The Star-Child". The action of "The Birthday of the Infanta" takes place in Spain at an unspecified point in the past. It is the twelfth birthday of the Infanta the only daughter and only child of the King of Spain. For her entertainment an ugly young dwarf dancer is brought to the court. The Dwarf is completely unaware of how hideous he looks and does not realize that the reason that others laugh in his presence is because they are mocking his appearance. When the Dwarf sees his own reflection for the first time in his life the consequences are severe. Viking Press hardcover

A quite crisp clean copy near fine with some scrunching to the the front interior fold of the glassine dust jacket else a very nice indeed with just a hint of scattered foxing. In the original silver chemise and slipcase. The chemise is in near fine condition with a modest marginal stain and the slipcase is missing one thin side panel thus good only. An entirely unrestored copy of this beautiful publication. An errata slip is apparently called for but none is present in this copy. Sturdy attractive tightly bound in hardcover format a particularly nice-looking set of The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde being twelve 12 volumes complete in the Patrons' Edition De Luxe edition. The author Oscar Fingal O'Fflahertie Wills Wilde was born on 16 October 1854 and died on 30 November 1900 and turned into an important and popular author poet and playwright author of a wildly important Gothic novel The Picture of Dorian Gray eventually also an in-demand dramatist of the first rank. He suffered a criminal conviction in 1895 "for gross indecency for homosexual acts" and suffered greatly in the Reading Gaol Wikipedia about which he wrote compellingly. The set is from the personal library of Jane Devereux Henderson as printed on the half-title surely by the publisher in an ornate brown font see below. All but the first volume feature the name "Jane Henderson Baumann" at first free endpaper in pencil in the same hand but currently of unknown provenance. Generally clean unmarked of interiors lightly toned at worst minimal rubbing to extremities faint cracking to a couple of joint bottoms noted below else attractive and sturdy. Bound simply handsomely in blue paper over boards grayish-blue cloth-backed and gilt ruling between paper and cloth both front and rear. Rubbed and lightly abraded printed paper labels to spine. Light bumping to spine heads and feet here and there all volumes with deckled fore-edges and all top-edges gilt. Jane Henderson Baumann was born Jane Devereux Henderson and was sometimes referred to as "Jennie" as a child her older brother being Daniel H. Henderson 1890-1933 and Belle G. Volume one with a tipped-in leaf stating this set of the Connoisseur's edition of the complete works of Oscar Wilde was specially prepared for Harry N. Jones. With introductions by various hands including Yeats Drinkwater Cowper Powys and a review by Walter Pater in volume four. The first set of Wilde's complete works was done in 1908 this later set is a lovely production of the wit's poems plays and prose. Light foxing to the topstains four volumes with a bit of rubbing to their cloth a small red spot on volume twelve's bottom textblock; jackets with light chipping heavier on volume one the jacket of volume two with two pieces of tape on its reverse.
