‎The Sphinx.‎

‎London: Elkin Mathews and John Lane 1894. In the original vellum decorated by Charles Ricketts First edition one of 200 unnumbered copies. Wilde's poem together with Charles Ricketts's art nouveau illustrations was described by W. E. Henley Wilde's harshest critic as "about as fin-de-Siecle a business as you ever saw" Frankel p. 155. Wilde first met Ricketts in 1889 and in the two years that followed the artist designed either parts or the entirety of several of Wilde's works. Now celebrated for his book illustration and design Ricketts is also noted for his theatre designs and costumes and he contributed to the first English production of Wilde's Salomé in 1906. James G. Nelson records that alongside the 200 copies published in the limited edition a further 103 copies were printed though most of these were left unbound. Small quarto. ‎Wilde, Oscar (ed by Holland, Merlin); Coward, Noel (ed by Cox, Michael)‎

‎The Wit of Oscar Wilde/The Cream of Noel Coward‎

‎London: The Folio Society 1997. First thus. Hardcover. As new. Beck Ian Archie; Smithson Helen. When we acquired these two Folio Society volumes in as-new condition it only made sense to market them together. After all both the authors are noted English wits separated by less than a generation both gained fame as playwrights but also worked in other literary forms and both of them are gay icons. More particularly to these books they are bound in such a way that they look like they belong together as parts of a series even if they weren't officially published as such and are edited in such a way as to provide an overview of the authors' careers in the form of extracts. They were published in 1997 and 1996 respectively. "The Wit of Oscar Wilde" is edited by Merlin Holland Wilde's own grandson who is widely respected as a sympathetic but not uncritical authority on Wilde. He created chapters according to genre and wrote an introduction to each one: essays stories "The Picture of Dorian Gray" Wilde's only novel the plays and a final chapter of works written while Wilde was in prison and immediately upon release that Holland titles "De Profundis" after the name of the first work. Each chapter begins with an introduction by Holland an epigram by Wilde and except for the last chapter ends with one of Wilde's short poems. There are many black-and-white woodblock-like illustrations throughout by Ian Archie Beck with more illustrations covering the binding.

"The Cream of Noel Coward" edited by Michael Cox with a preface by Graham Payn and Sheridan Morley follows much the same pattern. Cox arranged his book chronologically instead of by topic with most chapters dedicated to decades from the 1920s through the 1970s. He mostly includes acts and speeches from plays and films Cowards wrote and the lyrics of songs but there are also some essays poems and bits of biography. The complete script of the play "Private Lives" still one of Coward's most popular pieces of theater is included. Whereas the illustrations for the Wilde book were many and small the illustrations by Helen Smithson here are fewer but in the form of full-page prints and seem to have something of a surrealist bent. Again they carry over to the book cover.

As new unread. Both are bound in gold-colored cloth and show no signs of wear or damage to the boards or spine. All is tight and square. Illustrations wrap around the covers and spine printed in black. Spine lettering is also printed in black. The books do not have dust jackets but instead have sturdy slipcases which also show no wear or damage covered in paper the same color as the book cloth. The text blocks are impeccably clean and undamaged printed on fine paper in Dante with Gill Sans Extra Condensed. These would be fine gifts for those who are already fans or a good introduction for those who have wondered what all the fuss is about. The Folio Society hardcover‎

‎WILDE, Oscar‎

‎The Works.‎

‎1908. London: Methuen and Co. 1908. Fourteen vols 8vo. Original white buckram upper boards lettered in gilt with gilt roundels designed by Charles Ricketts spines lettered directly in gilt top-edges gilt the others uncut; slight soiling to spines lettering to spines tarnished slight discolouration and a few marks to boards; occasional spotting to endpapers but internally bright and clean; a good set.First collected edition of Wilde's works edited by Robert Ross his friend sometime lover and literary executor limited to 1000 sets printed on handmade paper.'The text is taken in most instances from the last editions issued under the superintendence of the author. In some cases the volumes contain additional matter which had not previously been reprinted while some of the volumes contain matter here published for the first time' Mason p. 459. One volume The Picture of Dorian Gray though entirely uniform with the others was published by Charles Carrington in Paris. Wilde died bankrupt in Paris in 1900; the journalist and gallery owner Robert Baldwin Ross remained loyal to his friend after Wilde's 1895 trial for gross indecency and subsequent prison sentence. 'Before his release from Reading gaol Wilde had appointed Ross his literary executor; but with Wilde's estate bankrupt it was not until 1905 that Ross was able to pay Wilde's creditors and annul the bankruptcy. In 1905 Ross published De Profundis an abridged version of Wilde's tormented prison letter to Lord Alfred Douglas. In 1908 Ross published in fourteen volumes The Collected Works of Oscar Wilde' ODNB. This set is without the seldom-found fifteenth volume For the Love of the King published in 1922 as a supplementary volume to the 1908 Works. Mabel Cosgrove Wodehouse-Pearse Princess Chan-Toon had approached Methuen with letters purportedly by Wilde formerly in the possession of Robert Ross as well as the manuscript of the 'long-lost' play by Wilde; Wilde's bibliographer Christopher Sclater Millard - better known by his pseudonym Stuart Mason - sued Methuen for libel on the grounds that they had knowingly offered for sale as genuine a book which they knew to be a forgery. Wodehouse-Pearse was unable to attend the trial as she was then in prison for defrauding an elderly woman following a stint in a Mexican prison for blackmail.Mason pp. 459-85. hardcover‎
