Das Werk erschien nach einigen unvollständigen Raubdrucken erstmals 1762 unter Voltaires Namen und erfuhr obwohl es von der katholischen Kirche auf den Index gesetzt wurde und nur geheim publiziert werden konnte zahlreiche oft unauthorisierte Ausgaben. Allein aus dem Jahr 1775 sind u. a. Ausgaben unbekannter Herkunft eine aus Genf und mehrere mit dem vorgeblichen Druckort London nachzuweisen. Die unsignierten gestochenen Tafeln mit ironisch drastischen Darstellungen erotischer Szenen werden meist Claude Louis Desrais um 1746-1816 zugeschrieben. The letters are dated between December 1770 and April 1771. The text is attributed to Voltaire and it is in favour of Maupeou’s jurisdictional reform.<br /> <p><p><br /> René Nicolas Charles Augustin de Maupeou 1714–1792 as the chief minister of the French King made a revolutionary attempt to install the enlightened despotism in France through the suppression of the power of the parliament by destroying its system and the favour of the royal authority. <p>Geneve: Chez les Frères Cramer 1760 Early reprint published in the same year as the first edition. The first edition has a London imprint though it was actually printed in Geneva too and Voltaire's name does not appear on the title. Full modern speckled calf gilt-ruled spine edges stained red. Twelvemo. Small brown stain on verso of title-page and next recto some light dampstaining at top corner. Generally a very good copy. A spurious publication in which Voltaire blatantly pretends that this is a French translation of an original work by the brother of David Hume. According to Voltaire Hume's brother was pastor at an Edinburgh church and had produced two other plays which had been produced in London. "…il est le frère de ce célèbre philosophe Mr. Hume qui a creusé avec tant de hardiesse & de sagacité les fondements de la métaphysique & de la morale; ces deux philosophes sont également honneur à l'Ecosse leur patrie" preface. All editions of this work are rare. OCLC lists one copy of the present edition the Library of Congress copy. <p>Basle i.e. London : by W. Bowyer 1734. First edition. Although an English translation had been published in London as "Letters Concerning the English Nation" in 1733 this is the first appearance of the original French text of the book now generally known as the "Lettres Philosophiques" and as "the first bomb thrown at the Ancien Régime". It has been said of Voltaire that "he came to England a poet and left it a philosopher": however that may be this book resulting from his stay in 1726-1728 is "one of the greatest and most influential works of the eighteenth century and beyond . the book that taught the whole of Europe how to think" Voltaire Foundation. The letters contrasting English and French thinking deal variously with religion in England - Quakers Anglicans Presbyterians and Socinians; politics parliament and Magna Carta; trade commerce and the businessman who "contributes to the felicity of the world"; English empiricism and Francis Bacon John Locke and Isaac Newton; and literature - Shakespeare above all Wycherley Congreve Swift and Pope etc. The London publishers' preface is interesting on the author's extreme reluctance to sanction a French-language edition - they had suppressed this edition for an entire year but others were now preparing illicit editions and they now had to displease the author to please the public. The furore which greeted the French editions when they appeared probably justified Voltaire's reluctance and the use here of a fake Basle imprint. Foolscap 8vo 171 x 103mm. viii228xxpp. Bound in a creditable modern rendition of early eighteenth-century full panelled calf; sprinkled edges; a few slight marks; Voltaire's name added to title-page in manuscript; faint fringe of very pale discolouration to fore-edge throughout text barely visible in most places; a few minor internal marks and tiny flaws but a good copy of one of the key books of the Enlightenment. Full black moroccan leather binding 12° duodecimo edition. Spine professionally restored. Some wear and scratches on the binding but still very decorative. One of the earliest edition of this famous work of De Voltaire.According to G. Barber there are 17 editions of Candide printed in 1759 all with the same title. After his breakup with Frederick II 1754 Voltaire set up house near Geneva where the Cramer brother became his primary printers. Hoping to make a profit on their first edition of each new work these booksellers sent copies throughout Europe; counterfeiters their began their work. This is most likely a pirate copy dated 1759.A fascinating item that speaks to the economics and competitiveness of the early modern book trade especially with respect to counterfeits and forgeries. When Voltaires <em>Candide</em> was first published in 1759 the work achieved immense popularity in Europe despite broad condemnation from secular and religious leaders. To profit from the frenzy surrounding the workand the anonymity of its author who had adopted the pseudonym Monsieur le docteur Ralph many pirate copies have been published. Engraved title with vignette portrait by P. R. Maverick of New York. 1 vols. 12mo. Contemporary sheep morocco label; front joint cracked. Marginal browning of text browning or staining of endpapers else a very good copy with the contemporary signature of John Gebhard Jr on free endpaper. First American edition. This edition was first published in 1764. Engraved title with vignette portrait by P. R. Maverick of New York. 1 vols. 12mo. The editor notes on the advertisement leaf that he recognizes that there might be criticism for the translation and publication of this work "on account of the author's freedom in regard to matters of religion" but feels that the quality of the work exceeds its criticisms and the "True religion is not afraid of bearing the strictest examination." There was strong interest in the French writers of "free thought" and "intellectual liberalism" in America in the eighteenth-early 19th century especially Voltaire and Condillac. Obwohl Voltaire als Begründer einer kulturhistorisch verankerten wissenschaftlich fundierten und verständlich verfassten Geschichtsschreibung gilt wurden die Annalen zu seiner Zeit viel kritisiert und unter seinen Werken gering geachtet. A trifle dulled. Early French language notes in two distinct hands to initial and terminal fly-leaves and interleaved blank. 'Tout ce que raconte Madame la Marquise de Caylus est vrai; on voit une femme qui parle avec candeur. Ses Souvenirs serviront surtout à faire oublier cette foule de misérables écrits sur la cour de Louis XIV dont l'Europe a été inondée par des auteurs faméliques qui n'avaient jamais connu ni cette cour ni Paris'. The second state issued the same year as the first of the lively memoirs of Marthe-Marguerite de Caylus 1673-1729 that provide a piquant account of the intrigues of the inner court of Louis XIV. The work was edited for publication by Voltaire who supplied the preface and contextual notes. The manuscript additions in this work are concerned with Voltaire's editorship of the text. .
