Boards corners generally a little bumped. Spines of each volume are a little worn with age however all spine labels are present. Figure in vol. I is torn but complete. End papers of vols. From the library of the Dukes of Portland with their Crowned P device to upper board and further shelf-marks in gilt to spine. A handsome copy of the first London edition of the memoirs of Enlightenment philosopher and historian Voltaire 1694-1778. The work commences with an extract from an anonymous letter dated 2nd May 1784 which explains that two or three editions of the memoirs have already been seized and seven booksellers imprisoned yet despite this those who were close to Voltaire believe them to be authentic though he had insisted that they be destroyed upon his death a copy likely being secreted away by his secretary. . The memoirs of French philosopher Franois-Marie Arouet better known by his pseudonym Voltaire. Paul Souday born in Le Havre Aug. 20 1869 and died in Neuilly-sur-Seine July 7 1929 was a French literary critic and essayist. He contributed to many journals including the Grand Review and the Revue de Paris. He joined the newspaper Le Temps in 1892where he was in charge of literary criticism from 1912 to 1929. He is the author of a biography of Marcel Proust and a series of portraits of philosophers and writers. Dublin: Chez Byrne 1785. Third edition of Voltaire's self-penned reminiscences published a year after the first. This copy is from the library of Francis Hutcheson the 19th-century rector of Donaghadee and grandson of the Enlightenment philosopher of the same name with his engraved bookplate on the front pastedown and his 1784 ink signature on the title page. Octavo 167 x 96 mm pp. iv 208 4. Contemporary calf spine ruled in gilt and with red morocco panel edges yellow.
