Handsomely bound in contemporary sprinkled calf red morocco spines richly gilt in neo-classical style sprinkled edges. Wood-engraved head- and tailpieces. Engraved bookplates of General Oliver De Lancey c. 1749-1822 pasted over earlier labels. Front joint of vol. I a little tender light foxing principally to early leaves a pretty copy. Second edition of Polwhele's translation first published in Exeter six years before; with the usual cancel title dated 1792 a rarer variant is dated 1791 ESTC locating two copies only. The elegance of the book with its attractive printing and delicate wood-engraved headpieces is well matched by the bindings with neo-classical gilt tooling to the full red morocco backstrips. General De Lancey born into one of the "wealthiest and most powerful" families in New York saw extensive service on the loyalist side during the War of Independence - expedition to Long Island battle of Brooklyn capture of New York battles of White Plains and Monmouth Court House and "commanded the outposts in front of the New York lines from mid-1778 to the end of 1779. De Lancey was then appointed as deputy quartermaster-general to the force sent to South Carolina and after serving at the capture of Charles Town he became aide-de-camp to Lord Cornwallis and eventually succeeded Major André as adjutant-general to the army at New York" - while his father " raised equipped at his own expense and commanded three battalions of American loyalists" ODNB. OCLC: 504805539 First edition of this translation into German verse of Theocritus a third century B.C. poet usually thought of as the creator of ancient Greek bucolic poetry. The Idylls are grouped here as usual with works by Moschus and Bion. During his brief lifetime 1730-1761 the translator Christian Gottlieb Lieberk�hn studied theology at the University of Halle preparing a dissertation under Siegmund Jakob Baumgarten. He served in the Prussian Army during the Silesian Wars and as a chaplin during the Seven Years War. Somehow he found the time to publish at least five original literary works and also earned a reputation as a translator. In addition to the present translation of Theokritos Moschus and Bion Lieberk�hn also published a translation of the Pastorals of Publius Vergilius Maro and the French text of Georg Ludvig von Bar's 'Epitre diverses sur des subjets diverse.' There is a faint ink signature of a previous owner at the blank top margin of the title page. The paper is somewhat toned throughout with one brief ink mark in the text along with a few blots in the margins and the blank top corner of the last leaf is folded down without loss. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. A lovely production by the Cloister Press of Manchester and the first book to illustrated by the wood-engraver Vivian Gribble. 140 ll.Rare first issue of the first and only edition of a collection of Greek works many of the individual works appearing here in their first editions: one of the first books produced by the famous printer-publisher Aldus Manutius published less than a year after his first book. In fact Aldus printed only one complete book before the present edition though he also issued the first parts of two others all in Greek and published Bembo's Latin De Aetna in the same month.The first editions in the present collection include 12 of the Ecloques of Theocritus Hesiod's Theogonia or De generatione deorum and selections from the Greek gnomic poets. It is the most interesting of all Aldine Greek editions containing a wide variety of linguistic forms and packed with mythological or moralizing passages and as such highly interesting for the history of education and of humanism in general and the beginning of the study of Greek language and literature in particular. There are two issues of the present edition and the present first issue is the rarer. With armorial bookplate on the last leaf below the colophon. In very good condition and with large margins with the first 2 and last 2 leaves somewhat foxed a few leaves with small marginal worm holes along the foot edge or very faint marginal water stains none approaching the text.
