‎Edition originale de ce morceau alors inédit, qui sera repris dans plusieurs collectives ultérieures. Elle a été procurée par Claude-François de Rivarol (1762-1848), le frère du célèbre publiciste mort à Berlin en 1801. C'est lui qui recueillit naturellement les papiers et manuscrits de son frère, déposés chez un certain Lubbert, négociant de Hambourg. Avant cette remise, Sabatier de Castres avait pu avoir accès à ce fonds et en avait détourné le manuscrit ébauché d'une Théorie du corps politique, dont notre pièce formait l'introduction. On ne retrouva jamais ce texte, utilisé par l'indélicat Sabatier pour fournir la matière de son ouvrage De la Souveraineté (Hambourg, 1806). Seul subsiste donc cette spirituelle préface, bien dans le genre du publiciste en lequel s'était concentré l'esprit du XVIIIe siècle : "Cette même erreur, qui plaça notre petit globe terrestre à la première place de l'univers, donna au peuple la souveraineté dans l'ordre politique." - - VENTE PAR CORRESPONDANCE UNIQUEMENT‎

Certains des personnages sont célèbres, d'autres moins, mais tous croqués sans ménagement et avec un certain humour. Cet ouvrage suscita probablement de nombreuses inimitiés à l'auteur.‎

Un second tirage de l'originale à Hambourg chez Fauche diffère par les seuls fleuron et nom d'imprimeur.« Durant la Révolution, Rivarol se fit plus d'ennemis que ne lui en avait valu le Petit Almanach de nos grands hommes (1788) ; il attaqua les chefs politiques de la Révolution dans son Journal politique national, et dans la suite du Petit Almanach : le Petit Dictionnaire des grands hommes de la Révolution. Le 10 juin 1792, il gagna l'Angleterre, juste à temps pour se mettre à couvert de la vengeance des révolutionnaires. D'Angleterre, il passa à Bruxelles puis à Hambourg où il demeura cinq ans (1795-1800) et à Berlin, où il mourut » (Sgard, Dictionnaire des Journalistes, 691).2. Deuxième édition « très bien imprimée, aussi recherchée que l'originale (1784) ». « Rien n'est comparable à la prose française : cette forte affirmation résume le message de ce petit ouvrage écrit tout entier à la gloire de la France et de la langue française.
