First Edition which consisted of 2675 copies preceding the 1898 English edition. Stevenson wrote this at intervals between January 1893 and October 1894 laying it aside six weeks before his death to work on WEIR OF HERMISTON. As pointed out in an editorial note A.T. Quiller-Couch wrote the final six chapters from notes and outlines left by Stevenson. Though the binding design does not bear her initials it is by Margaret Armstrong.
