‎Preston Retreat unknown Philadelphia: Preston Retreat 1933. Very Good . Together with an extract from the will of Dr. Jonas Preston and the Address of Eli K. Price esq. at the laying of the corner-stone July 17 1837." 2 44 p. frontispiece; 22 cm. Stapled grey paper covers printed in black. List of managers as of 1933 on p. 2 has been edited by a former owner who crossed out five names and added five others. Dr. Jonas Preston 1764-1836 left his estate to establish a "Lying-in Hospital for Indigent Married Women of good character" in Philadelphia. The Preston Retreat building designed by Thomas U. Walter was completed in 1840; insufficient funds prevented the maternity hospital from opening until 1866. For nearly 100 years it provided superior care for childbirth; it merged with Pennsylvania Hospital in 1960 and the building was demolished in 1963. Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: one vertical crease through the middle; annotations on p. 2 as noted; otherwise clean and tight.‎

Brown wrappers printed in black with the West Point emblem on the front. "R.I.P." handwritten below title on front wrapper. Extract from 69th Annual Report of the Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy West Point N.Y. June 13 1938. Inscription dated Dec. 4 1939 on p. 1 by Arthur H. Gerhard whose father was a classmate of David Alexander Lyle 1845-1937 both members of the West Point class of 1869. Lyle received the Legion of Honor from France in 1899 for inventing the Lyle life-saving gun. The Lyle gun was used to rescue people from foundering ships until replaced by rockets in 1952. Arthur H. Gerhard's father was William Gerhard 1847-1914; he was married to Sally Lyle Howell Gerhard 1855-1879 presumably a relative of David A. Lyle. Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: puncture near lower edge of front wrapper; tail of spine slightly rubbed; faint stain on back wrapper; otherwise clean and tight.‎

‎Hartford, Conn. unknown Hartford Conn.: Hartford Conn. 1872. Very Good. 1 leaf 43 x 28 cm. 17 x 11 inches folded to 21 x 10 cm. This policy was issued to Joseph Jacklinski for $20 to insure a two-story frame house at Eddyville Ulster Co. NY for $2000 for three years. Stamped twice with a blue stamp indicating that it was issued by C.S. Clay Insurance and Real Estate agent Kingston NY. Signed on Dec. 11 1871 by George L. Chase president; J.D. Browne secretary; and C.S. Clay agent. Bears two blue 25-cent revenue stamps. In March 1872 the policy was transferred to the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company which had purchased the property from Jacklinski. The Delaware and Hudson Canal Company hauled coal on barges from northeastern Pennsylvania to Eddyville NY from 1828 to 1898. In Very Good Condition: just starting to separate from the edges at the folds; staining to the outside when folded; otherwise clean and bright.‎

The Reverend Joseph Abbott 1808-1867 was born in Philadelphia and in 1835 married Margaret Ann Ross Tilton 1815-1885. He served in the First Presbyterian Church of Newburyport Mass. and then Dane Street Church of Beverly Mass. Congregational from 1830 until 1865. This biographical essay focuses on his work as a minister and contains Abbott's own reflections on his career as well as comments by the Reverend Milton P. Braman and others. In Good Condition: front wrapper detached but present; wrapper is stained and edges are creased and chipped with loss at corners; archival repairs at top and bottom edges of front wrapper; foxing throughout; pages are otherwise clean and tight. A very scarce biography of a mid-19th-century Massachusetts minister.‎

Top page edges gilt. Marbled endpapers matching boards. Bookdealer's label on front fixed endpaper of each volume for Mawson Swan & Morgan of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Former owner's engraved bookplate on front fixed endpaper of each volume for Richard Ormond of Tynemouth. This bookplate is #187 in the Grolier Club exhibition catalog of angling book plates 1918 after Thomas Bewick based on the John Anderson Jr. plate. Frontispiece portrait of Henry in vol. 1; double frontispiece of song "Charmante Gabrielle" with music for voice with accompaniment in vol. 2. In Good Condition: front board of vol. 2 detached but present; joints corners and ends of spines rubbed; leather on boards is darkened; occasional foxing largely along fore-edge margins; otherwise pages are clean and tight. A solid and attractive set. We also have Lucy Aikin's works on Elizabeth I Charles I and James I in identical bindings and similar condition.‎
