The foremost Federalist orator and theoretician Ames renders a fine weaving of Washington's career and the nation's history. As the result of the Peace of 1763 closing the French and Indian War "our settlements no longer checked by enemies on the frontier rapidly increased; and it was discovered that America was growing to a size that could defend itself. In this perhaps unforeseen but at length obvious state of things the British Government conceived a jealousy of the Colonies of which their intended measures of precaution they made no secret." Washington heeded his country's call: "Our history is but a transcript of his claims on our gratitude." Ames reviews the rancorous relations of states under the Articles of Confederation. "The peace of America hung by a thread and factions were already sharpening their weapons to cut it." Again Washington saved the country by lending his support to the Constitution. Unsigned AN with initialed signature tipped on 1p 7�" X 3�" n.p. n.d. Very good. Odd fragment apparently from a legal agreement concerning a house reading in part: "1st. that you agree in the interpretation I have put on the expression of 'a convenient house' as meaning also convenient outhouses and garden." An initialed signature has been tipped in at the close of this partial document which has been tastefully double matted alongside a lovely 5�" X 8" period steel engraved portrait of Ames and engraved brass plaque and framed in a �" antiqued silver frame overall dimensions 19" X 12". Congress's most eloquent Federalist and Anglophile advocates adoption of the Jay Treaty with England. His support assured its passage. He warns the opposition "that a government wantonly refusing to fulfill its engagement is the corrupter of its citizens." The French Revolution has destroyed the good judgment of some Americans: "In the spirit of party we could not love or hate enough." Citizen Genet had a lot to do with this: in an effort to raise an army in this country against England "every popular passion was inflamed." According to DAB Joseph Priestly who was in the gallery called this speech "the most bewitching piece of parliamentary oratory I ever heard." Channing's History called it "one of the greatest speeches ever made in Congress." "The effect produced was absolute enchantment" Port Folio.
