He first saw active service in the Dutch Helder campaign of 1799 and took part in an expedition to Egypt two years later. Colborne served in the Peninsular War 1808-14 and took part in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. After the war he was promoted to colonel and became aide-de-camp to the Prince Regent. Colborne went on to serve in a number of high-ranking posts. He was Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey 1825 and Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada from 1828 until 1836. After he left Canada Colborne went on to serve as Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands 1843-9 and commanded the forces in Ireland 1855-60. He was made a field marshal in 1860.
