His first novel "Digby Grand" was an instant success when it was published in 1852. Whyte-Melville went on to publish another twenty-one novels before his death after a hunting accident in 1878. Whyte-Melville was passionate about hunting and often wrote about the sport. "Songs and Verses" was one of his poetry anthologies besides "Legend of the True Cross" however he was mostly known for his sporting works. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally smart. Light fading to the spines. Prior owner's ink inscriptions to the recto to the front free endpapers. Front hinges of 'Kate Coventry' and 'The Gladiators' are starting but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedown of one volume 'George J. Clark'. Internally firmly bound though 'The Queen's Maries' with a few leaves working loose. 'Digby Grand' binding is broken in places with leaves working loose and some loose leaves. Pages are bright and clean with a few spots to a couple of volumes to the first and last few pages. A tight and handsome later printing undated but circa 1890 of this tale first published in 1863 a "New Edition" from this publisher's "Select Library of Fiction" series -- the best known of the several historical novels by this Scottish novelist 1821-78 most of whose books concern outdoor sports. Most intriguing though is this copy's provenance: It hails from the library of Confederate First Lady Varina Howell Davis 1826-1906. At the top of the title page she pens "V Jefferson Davis. / 1890." in brown ink. This would have been signed during the brief period between her husband's death in 1889 and her moving from Biloxi Mississippi to New York City in 1891. Tiny lightly pencilled note at bottom of title page in hand of noted autograph dealer/popularizer Charles Hamilton 1913-96. Highly unusual. Longmans, Green, and Co hardcover

Mount Melville St. Andrews 1863. 1-1/2 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Very good. With accompanying envelope. 1-1/2 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Sent to literary editor Mathew Cooke in reply to a Prospectus for a new book being offered by subscription and Cooke's request of an advance payment of 3 guineas Whyte-Melville replies: "as I remitted you in advance for a book you wrote to me about called the History & Articles of Masonry in June 1860 & never received the work I do not feel disposed to do the same now with perhaps a similar result." While The History and Articles of Masonry a transcript of the manuscript now known as the Cooke Manuscript was indeed published in 1861 Whyte-Melville was justified in his caution for Monumenta Masonica was never published. A canny letter from George Whyte-Melville 1821-1878 soldier sportsman and prolific Victorian writer famed for his sporting social and historical novels. His adventurous life ended in 1878 when he was killed instantly in an accident in the hunting field. <br/><br/> unknown
