Shelley Mary Wollstonecraft
Valperga: or the Life and Adventures of Castruccio Prince of Lucca. By the Author of ‘Frankenstein’.
London: G. and W.B. Whittaker 1823. Rare first edition of Shelley's second novel which has been called "a meditation on political psychological and sexual power" and is considered by many to be her finest work. 12mo. bound in 19th century three quarter calf over marbled boards by Bumpus gilt titles and tooling to the spine morocco spine labels raised bands. In very good condition contemporary name. A very sharp example. Valperga "was a novel surprisingly long in its gestation " and possibly concurrent with Frankenstein . "Although not published until 1823 its inception actually dates from six years earlier. 'I first thought of it in our library in Marlow' Mary Shelley wrote as she was completing it in 1821." See: Curran Stuart. Cambridge Companion to Mary Shelley". The preface details some literary sources for this historical tale of the fourteenth-century despot Castruccio Castracani. In terms of historical fiction it represents a feminine counterpart to the male romanticism of Sir Walter Scott. Ref: Block p 213; Summers A Gothic Bibliography p. 541. G. and W.B. SHELLEY Percy Bysshe
"We Pity the Plumage But Forget the Dying Bird." An Address to the People on The Death of the Princess Charlotte. By the Hermit of Marlow
London: Reprinted for Thomas Rudd c.1843. First edition 8vo 16 pp. First and last page evenly browned some mild chipping to edges. Sewn as issued a very good example of a fragile item. With a title taken from Thomas Paine's "The Rights of Man" Shelley contrasts the public reaction to the death of Princess Charlotte to the fate of the Pentrich Martyrs in Derbyshire hanged for treason following an uprising inspired by a government agent. Originally advertised by Rudd as a facsimile reprint of an edition published in only 20 copies in 1816 though no examples of that work exist and there are no mentions of it in any correspondence. Wise concludes that the story was most likely invented to avoid suspicion as to the manuscript source of the work concluding "one thing is certain. that had Shelley printed such a pamphlet he would not have restricted it to twenty copies." Wise A Shelley Library p.46. [London]: (Reprinted for Thomas Rudd) unknown

"We Pity the Plumage But Forget the Dying Bird." An Address to the People on the Death of the Princess Charlotte
London: "Reprinted for Thomas Rodd" 1843. First edition. Fine. 8vo. Gatherings stitched; red morocco slipcase. According to Wise: "In 1843 when advertising the present pamphlet for sale Rodd asserted that it was a facsimile reprint of an alleged original edition of which the author had printed twenty copies in 1816. No example of this mysterious original has ever been unearthed; no trace of it beyond Rodd's own statement has ever been discovered; and no mention of any kind either of its printing or distribution is to be found in the correspondence of Shelley or any of his friends. My own opinion is that no original ever existed that the private impression of twenty copies was a myth and that Rodd's so-called facsimile reprint of 1843 is in fact the actual princeps of the Address" Ashley V p.64. 'We Pity the Plumage But Forget the Dying Bird' - An Address to the People on the Death of the Princess Charlotte
London: Thomas Rodd 1843. 16pp disbound from a volume at some point t.e.g. Slightly browned one or two spots of foxing but generally clean. Wise notes that "In 1843 when advertising the present pamphlet for sale Rodd asserted that it was a facsimile reprint of an alleged original edition of which the author was said to have printed twenty copies in 1816. No example of this mysterious original has ever been unearthed . My own opinion is that no original ever existed . The motto 'We pity the plumage but forget the dying bird' was taken by Shelley from Paine's 'Rights of Man' 1817 Pt.I p. 24 'He Burke pities the plumage but forgets the dying bird'. This clearly denies any impression of the address dated 1816". The pamphlet decries the difference between the public concern for the death of the Princess and their indifference to the plight of the poorest in society plus ca change and also examines the execution of the leaders of the Pentrich Rising. Wise 'A Shelley Library' page 46. First Edition. Disbound. Good. 8vo. [Thomas Rodd] Paperback
