‎SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe‎

‎Letters from percy bysshe shelley to elizabeth hitchener. Now first published. With an Introduction and Notes‎

‎London: Bertram Dobell 1908. li 1 351pp 1. Original publisher's navy cloth printed paper lettering-piece to spine. Lightly rubbed lettering-piece chipped. Internally clean and crisp. William St. Clair's copy with his pencilled ownership inscription to recto of FFEP and inked and pencilled notes to rear endpapers. The first edition of the collected correspondence of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley 1792-1822 to his confidant Sussex schoolteacher Elizabeth Hitchener 1782-1822. Shelley wrote to Hitchener frequently during summer of 1811 on a wide range of subjects from philanthropy to religious philosophy. After some time realising that his letters might have given the wrong impression Shelley felt compelled to announce to Hitchener his impending marriage to Harriet Westbrook. Many who were aware of Hitchener’s correspondence with Shelley suspecting that she was his mistress though there is no proof that this was the case. Later Hitchener closed her school in order to join the Shelley family only to be shunned; Shelley's initial interest in her having waned. William St. Clair 1937-2021 British scholar and senior civil servant notable as the author of The Godwins and the Shelleys The Biography of a Family 1989 and The Reading Nation in the Romantic Period 2004. . ‎Shelley, Percy Bysshe ; Bertram Dobell [Editor-SIGEND] ; H Buxton Foman,Esq [Recipient]‎

‎Letters From Percy Bysshe Shelley to Elizabeth Hitchener; Now First Published. With An Introduction and Notes‎

‎London: Bertram Dobell. 1908. First trade; First. Hardcover. Very Good-. 8vo; li 351 pages; Publisher's pale plum linen spine lettered in dark brown and with a decorative device in gilt. An unworn copy but with some lifting of the binding cloth -- particularly at the edges and minor cover spine -- particularly along the spine. This copy of the first trade publication of these letters is greatly enhanced by a presentation inscription from the publisher / editor Bertram Dobell to the dean of Shelley collectors of his time. This ink inscription appears in ink on the front free-endpaper: "H. B. Foman Esq. / with the compls. and good / wishes of Bertram Dobell." Beneath this inscription Mr. Dobell has ventured into verse: "To Shelley both of us pay homage due / I a poor squire his Knightly cham_ / pion you. pen flourish. The presentation is confirmed by the presence of the engraved pictorial bookplate of H. Buxton Forman -- which depicts the collector working at papers at his desk overseen by a portrait bust of Shelley on the shelves above. The provenance is further confirmed by the recipient's neat and tiny pencil note on the uppper corner of the verso of the front-free endpaper: HBF / "20 ii 08 / day of recpt" Forman has clipped and tucked a collection of reviews of the book loosely inside the rear cover -- there are minormarks from two cellophane stamp hinges still present which once held the clipped reviews in place. Henry. Buxton Forman 1842-1917 was an active book collector bibliographer editor and civil servant. He is still remembered his bibliographies of Percy Shelley and John Keats -- which seemed definitive in their time and for many years afterward. For many years during the later decades of the nineteenth century his name was frequently associated with the active collector and literary bibliographer Thomas James Wise. Alas through some combination of avid admiration of the most collectable of poets and authors Wise and Forman "published" a series of forgeries -- these were mostly genuine works but issued by Wise and Forman in tiny private editions with false or misleading imprints. But it must be stated that both these gentlemen kept busy with some legitimate activities and publications with the expanding world of collecting and bibliography. Both men were active in the "Shelley Society" from the time of its founding in 1885 -- as was Bertram Dobell publisher of this volume. Most scholars consider that Forman withdrew from the nefarious end of his active literary life after recoverning from a mysterious illness in 1906 and his retiring from the Post Office in 1907. He appears to have wanted to disassociate himself from T. J. Wise who continued with his old ways right up until exposure came in 1934 with the publication of ' An Enquiry into the Nature of Certain Nineteenth Century Pamphlets' in 1934 -- carefully written by two younger booksellers: Graham Pollard and John Carter. Forman was long gone by then -- but Pollard and Carter's well-researched and documented book ruined the lofty reputation of Thomas J. Wise as a collector and authority on literary matters. It should be acknowledged the both the letters published here and the circumstances under which this 1908 publication saw the light of day -- are entirely genuine. There is a statement on the final page of Bertram Dobell's introduction to this book: "These letters were transcribed in 1896 by Mr. Thos. J. Wise who in 1900 printed them for private circulation only in an issue . of thirty copies. The book is now reprinted from stereotyped plates then made; but the introduction and notes are now added for the first time."--p. li. This statement is neither completely true nor entirely definitive as to the activity of Thomas J. Wise in relation to Shelley's correspondence with the unfortunate Miss Hitchener who died in 1821. But without regard to the complicated tale of Wise's intervention in these texts it can be confidently stated that the original letters passed as a legacy to Charles Hargrove who gave them to the British Museum in 1907; they are now in the British Library. It is an interesting side-light on the complex history of the T. J. Wise and H. Buxton Forman literary "enterprises" -- that the present volume bears on its last leaf the truthful printer's slug of the firm of "Richard Clay London." The Clay firm had done the physical work of printing most of the Wise forgeries over the course of several decades -- Wise was then a universally respected collector and scholar who happened to be a very very good customer of the printing firm of Richard Clay . Of course most of that very active firm's work was done without any intention to deceive as was the case with this 1908 book. An interesting copy to say the least.; Signed by Editor . ‎Shelley, Percy Bysshe und Robert Browning (Hrsg):‎

‎Letters of Percy Bysshe Shelley. With an Introductory Essay by Robert Browning.‎

‎London: Edward Moxon Dover Street 1852. leather_bound. Sehr gut. vi 1 1 blank 165 2 1 blank pp. - 8 pp. List of Books. Ganzleder Handeinband mit reicher Vergoldung. Octavo ca. 197 x 124 mm. Einband minimalst berieben erste und letzte Blätter braunfleckig sehr schönes Exemplar. Contemporary olive morocco 203 x 133 x 175 mm spine with five raised bands panelled and lettered in gilt richly gilt with gilt fleural tools and lines boards with gilt line panels. Top edge gilt burgundy endleaves. Bound by Riviere & Son and signed on upper turn-in. This is the first edition of the Browning Essay. Edward Moxon bought twenty three letters at a Sotheby & Wilkinson sale 12 May 1851. The vendor of these letters was the bookseller William White who had obtained them with other items including Byron forgeries from 'Major George Gordon de Luna Byron' also known as DeBibler who claimed to be the illegitimate son of the poet Byron by a Spanish lady. The son of Sir Francis Palgrave realised that Letter XXI to William Godwin from Florence was cribbed from a letter to his father. "An ingenious forgery perpetrated by an impostor claiming to be the natural son of Lord Byron. Two genuine letters which happened to be in Moxon's hands were included. The fraud was discovered to the chagrin of Browning and Moxon who at once destroyed all obtainable copies of the book" Granniss. The two genuine letters in the present volume are No. V to Sir James Henry Lawrence August 17 1812 = Ingpen #186; de Ricci 186 and No. XXIII to Keats Pisa July 27 1820 = Ingpen #484; de Ricci 484. "One of the most ingenious literary forgeries of modern times is recalled by a rare work which a London bookdealer now is offering for sale for $375. It is an octavo volume published in 1852 by Moxon and entitled 'Letters of P. B. Shelley with an introductory essay by Robert Browning. Browning really wrote the introduction but not one of the twenty-five letters in it is by Shelley. These letters purported to have been sent by Percy Bysshe Shelley the eminent English poet to various of his friends. They were clever imitations of his hand-writing and bore the postmarks of cities in which it was known that Shelley had resided. The book made a sensation. Browning's preface is one of his most admired pieces of prose writing. Moxon sent copies of the work to a number of distinguished literary men among others Lord Alfred Tennyson. Francis Turner Palgrove son of Sir Francis Palgrove the historian was at the time a guest of Lord Tennyson. He picked up the book one day and opened it at a letter from Shelley to Godwin his father-in-law which seemed strangely familiar to him. He read on and found that the letter was a plagiarism of an article which his father had contributed to the Quarterly Review in 1840. Moxon when informed of this discovery said that he had bought the letters at a public sale and that they seemed authentic. The handwriting appeared genuine the seal was Shelley's and the addresses bore the stamp of the Post Offices of the italian towns where Shelley had lived. It happened that at the same sale the poet's son Sir Percy Florence Shelley had bought other letters of his father which were of a private and personal character. These letters were found to be at utter variance with well-known facts. Moxon at once suppressed the book the auctionneer said that the letters had come to him from a bookseller named W. White. White in turn said that he had bought them from an unknown woman who claimed to have received them from Fletcher Lord Byron's servant. Further search revealed that behind this unknown woman was the forger George Gordon Byron alias De Gibler. This adventurer bore a striking resemblance to Lord Byron had assumed his name and had passed himself off as Byron's natural son. He almost succeeded in palming off on a publisher some unedited remains of Lord Byron. As soon as the facts about the letters became known he disappeared ." New York Times February 26 1911: "Shelley's forged letters. Rare copy for sale in London the work of G. G. Byron". Erste Ausgabe. ‎SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe - SHARP, William‎

‎Life of Percy Bysshe Shelley.‎

‎London: Walter Scott 1887. First edition presentation copy inscribed by the author to a fellow poet Shelley critic and literary biographer "To Mathilde Blind. With the admiration & affection of her friend William Sharp. Oct 27 '87". Blind was a recognized authority on poetry among her contemporaries lecturing on Shelley and editing A Selection from the Poems of Percy Bysshe Shelley 1872. Blind 1841-1896 who wrote the first biography of George Eliot in 1883 was widely read and praised in Britain and America for her epic poem The Ascent of Man 1889 a feminist response to Darwin. She was a prominent voice in the New Woman movement a feminist ideal of the late 19th century that included figures such as Vernon Lee Amy Levy and Olive Schreiner. Like Shelley Blind's "burning sense of political and social injustice runs like a unifying thread through her work" Orlando. Blind's literary and political careers paralleled that of her close friend William Sharp 1855-1905 who later wrote her eulogy. A women's rights activist Sharp published under the pseudonym Fiona Macleod from 1893 but his erstwhile friend William Butler Yeats likely sensed Macleod's true identity. "The production of the female persona of Fiona seems to have caused Sharp frequent ill health culminating in a near total breakdown in 1897-8; moreover he had a feeling of being haunted by past lives" ODNB. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt top edge gilt others uncut. Bookplate of R. G. E. Sandbach on front pastedown. Spine slightly cocked and rubbed minor rubbing to covers couple of small marks to front cover faint foxing to endpapers and a couple of margins else bright. A very good copy. hardcover‎

‎Miscellaneous Poems‎

‎London: William Benbow 1826. 2 144pp. With an engraved frontispiece. Later full calf ruled in gilt and blind contrasting black morocco lettering-piece. Marbled endpapers. Lightly rubbed and marked upper board sunned. Bookplate of John A. Radford to FEP leaves browned and stained title and frontispiece chipped and small marginal loss to upper edge of terminal leaf. An early pirated edition of Shelley's poetry one of many publications produced by radicals and Reformists to spread Shelley's poetry affordably to a working-class audience. As such the typesetting is far from perfect with the running title being inverted on one occasion. The collection contains mostly shorter lyrics particularly sonnets dirges and other songs as well as multiple fragments. William Benbow 1787-1864 was linked to the piracy of Shelley as early as 1815 due to his association with George Cannon pseudonym Erasmus Perkins editor of the Theological Enquirer a periodical which reprinted substantial portions of Queen Mab. A nonconformist preacher and major figure of the Reform Movement Benbow was imprisoned several times for alleged political and publishing offences but never charged. . 8vo. William Benbow unknown‎

‎London: William Benbow 1826. First pirated edition. Pencilled note on the Buxton Forman copy identifies this edition as a piracy. Collation as issued: 1 1 and C-D 2E Z 2A-2B U-Y 2F 2H all in 6s. 1 vols. 12mo 150 x 90 mm. Bound in Twentieth Century brown levant elaborately gilt with flower devices on the spine and front cover stamped by Riviere & Sons uncut fine. With the bookplate of Louis Ledoux. First pirated edition. Pencilled note on the Buxton Forman copy identifies this edition as a piracy. Poems selected from Benbow's edition of "Miscellaneous and Posthumous Poems" published the same year. ii title contents leaf 144pp. headline on page 143 not reversed. Collation as issued: 1 1 and C-D 2E Z 2A-2B U-Y 2F 2H all in 6s. 1 vols. 12mo 150 x 90 mm. But for 1824's Posthumous Poems this is the first selected poems of Shelley. This version reprints the poems from the earlier volume omitting the longer poems and translations but adding "Stanzas Written in Dejection near Naples" with the fifth line of the first stanza with the correct reading "earth" for "air" which did not appear in the authorized editions until 1870. In Watt's "Poetical Album" 1829 this line is entirely omitted. Only four copies of this edition have sold at auction in the last 35 years. It was through this work that Browning first became acquainted with his first poetic hero. Grannis 87 William Benbow unknown‎
