Handsomely bound almost certainly by The Harcourt Bindery ca. 1900 in full red morocco covers with double gilt border with fancy corner-pieces enclosing a spray of flowers elaborately stamped in gilt and with green morocco leaf inlays and buff morocco inlaid flowers. Spines with four raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments and with three olive green morocco flower inlays. Highly decorative gilt turn-ins surrounding an oval panel of green morocco decorated in gilt with a large central gilt flower with inlaid red morocco flower head green moire silk end-leaves all edges gilt. Minimal rubbing and repairs to the outer joints otherwise fine. Although unsigned the binding is almost certainly by The Harcourt Bindery.<br /> <br /> An exquisitely bound collection that celebrates the talents of Percy Bysshe Shelley 1792-1822 one of the most significant Romantic poets in the English language. Husband to Mary Shelley the author of Frankenstein and friend of Lord Byron Shelley moved in a radical literary circle and died a tragic early death. This is a very nice copy of Shelley's poem dedicated to Mary Shelley with the errata leaf at the rear. In 1817 the publishers C. and J. Ollier agreed to publish Shelley's long poem Laon and Cythna. Shelley's new father-in-law William Godwin recommended a master printer for the job Buchanan Millan who made minor alterations to the text without consulting the poet. Shelley wrote to the Olliers complaining about these liberties whereupon the Olliers read the work for the first time and realised what they had agreed to publish. In the original version the titular lovers were brother and sister. London was alive with gossip about Shelley living with both Mary Godwin and her half-sister Claire Clairmont and in contemporary usage such a ménage was termed incest St Clair p. 432. Shelley therefore made alterations removing any hint of incest and gave the book a new title The Revolt of Islam by which it is still known. The book is made up from original sheets of Laon and Cythna with 26 cancelled leaves and a new title leaf. A few copies were issued with the title misdated 1817; this is the second issue as usual with the correct date. Octavo 223 x 144 mm. Early 20th-century red crushed morocco spine with five raised bands lettered and decorated in gilt turn-ins richly gilt blue endpapers top edge gilt others trimmed. Binding a little rubbed a couple of corners lightly worn short closed tear to title page skilfully repaired a few small marginal stains to contents otherwise clean internally. A very good copy. James Lorimer Graham was the fourth Duke and seventh Marquis of Montrose. At this time he was the Marquis of Graham. He was a statesman serving as privy councillor a commissioner of the India board lord steward of the queen's household chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster postmaster-general where he was involved in several important changes including the Electric Telegraphs Bill which put the telegraphic communication system in the hands of the post office and also Chancellor of the University of Glasgow. Publisher's deluxe binding of full vellum over boards front cover and spine elaborately stamped and lettered in gilt pictorial end-papers top edge gilt. In the scarce original pictorial dust jacket with just some very minor rubbing at extremities. Small neat and inoffensive ink stamped signature on half-title and title-page. Quarto 10 3/8 x 7 3/4 in; 264 x 195 mm. Collating xii 4 17-127 1. Eighteen full color tipped-in plates including frontispiece with captioned tissue guards. Small color halftone or black and white some full page illustrations to each page. Housed in the original green cardboard slipcase with the color illustration from page 61 on front panel. A tight bright and Fine copy of this generously produced volume.<br /> <br /> "No more tastefully illustrated book of verse could be desired than the elaborately artistic edition of Shelley's Sensitive Plant edited by Mr. Edmund Gosse illustrated with much richness of coloring and gracefulness of design by Mr. Charles Robinson and imported by the Lippincott Co. Mr. Gosse's introduction throws new light on the ' Lady the wonder of her kind' who played the part of 'an Eve in this Eden ' where grew the sensitive plant. Drawing upon Medwin's notes to a never-published second edition of his life of the poet he tells us that this paragon of her sex was a certain Countess of Mountcashell an Irish lady about fifty years of age of sufficient unconventionality to be welcomed by Shelley and his company as a congenial spirit. The notes on this lady and the editor's gleaning of facts concerning the mimosa pudica or sensitive plant celebrated bythe poet are interesting. The illustrations large and small accompanying the slender thread of text form the conspicuous feature of the book and make it one of the most sumptuous gift volumes of the year. Robinson Charles. 1st trade ed. 4to full green decorated cloth illustrated endpapers and 18 mounted tissue-guarded color plates by Charles Robinson as well as many spot illustrations in line and two colors. Printed entirely on heavy glossy paper.<br /> <br /> Separating slightly at a few signatures bump to bottom of spine and previous owner touched up the color on on the tips and lower spine edge. Still a nice bright copy without previous owner's marks with bright pictorial embossed gilt on the spine and cover. One of Robinson's most wonderfully decorative covers. In a reconstituted pictorial dust wrapper illustrated front and rear with the same artwork printed in black.<br /> <br /> Scarce in jacket—this one is split at the spine and is missing the lower half of the spine and a 1/2 inch at the top. Except for a 1/2" chip to the top rear corner and a bit more loss along the edge both covers and flaps are complete. Heinemann hardcover

Publisher's original blue cloth over beveled boards with titles and decorations in gilt to the upper board and spine. Top edge gilt. Title page printed in brown and red. Beautifully illustrated with twelve tissue-guarded black and white plates by Laurence Housman. An excellent near fine copy the binding firm with just a little rubbing at the extremities the cloth and gilt bright and fresh. The spine is slightly rolled. The contents with a small previous owner's signature to the top of the front endpaper are otherwise clean throughout. 'The Sensitive Plant' a relatively late poem in Shelley's short but prolific writing career takes a symbolic mythic approach to the themes of beauty and death. In his note on the illustrations Housman states his belief that illustration cannot improve or add to an already beautiful poem and can only capture the unique response of the individual reader; the richly detailed atmospheric garden he offers here is surely a worthy and beautiful response to Shelley's vision.
