Contains 22 chapters in all covering the lives of notable Italian men of art and science from Dante Alighieri to Ugo Foscolo. Originally published in Great Britain circa 1830-35 as part of the "Cabinet Cyclopaedia" series edited by Lardner with the lives of eminent Spanish and Portuguese persons omitted in the American issue; see BMC volume 14 page 866 column 648; also volume 23 page 388 column 81 under Shelley; latter entry has 1830 date. Mrs. Shelley's contributions include the lives of Boccaccio Machiavelli and Petrarch and probably even more according to her written testimony and the London publisher's ledgers. With publisher's 2-page list of "recently published" titles undated at rear. Eminently readable multi-volume copy of a rare and important biographical compilation. Spines sunned and slightly faded; slight wear to extremities mainly fraying and rubbing to head and foot of spines and corners; slight scuffing stains and rubbing to covers; lacking heads of contents pages of both volumes approximately 1 inch but does not affect text; previous owner's ink inscription on front free endpaper of volume 2 faded; rubberstamped date at head of first page of text in volume 1; some internal browning and/or foxing throughout mainly to edges endpapers and preliminaries.
