Loosely laid in are the original card flaps from the perished plain glassine dustwrapper. Housed in the very lightly rubbed publisher's slipcase. A superb example. Limited to 525 copies of which this is copy number 40 signed by Arthur Rackham to the limitation page. Hand numbered on the printed label on the slipcase. This volume collects 24 of Hans Andersen's tales including The Snow Queen; The Ugly Duckling; The Tinder-Box; The Little Mermaid; The Princess and the Pea; The Emperor's New Clothes. Although this is clearly the first English trade edition the cloth binding is a previously unrecorded variant with the U.S. David McKay stamp at the foot of the spine. The British and US printings were identical both printed by R. & R. Clark Ltd. Edinburgh although the American issue is 1/8 inch shorter than the British issue. First US trade edition first printing published the same year as the London edition published by Harrap and identical in every point except for the inclusion of the publisher's box which is unique to the US edition. This edition is scarce with both the dust jacket and box intact and it has been historically "one of the most difficult of Rackham's books to buy" Hudson p. 134. Considered to be some of his finest work "Rackham's illustrations to Grimm Hans Andersen or Poe show him at his most imaginative and observant of human nature" Hamilton p. 11. When the Observer invited Hugh Walpole to choose the best picture-book of 1932 he awarded the accolade "without hesitation to Rackham's Hans Andersen. He has risen nobly to his subject. He has acquired a new tenderness and grace. His fantasy is stronger than ever" Hudson p. 133-4.
