VIII 298 pp Publisher's Catalogue 32 pp. � First English language edition being the first separate edition of Hans Christian Andersen's first official autobiography. <br>The English edition preceded the Danish with 95 years ! as the first Danish edition did not appear until 1942 when it was issued by H. Tops�e-Jensen under the title "Mit eget Eventyr uden Digtning" i.e. "My Own Fairy Tale Without Poetry". The first German edition appeared as an introduction in the collected German edition of Andersen's works also in 1847 under the title: "Das M�rchen meines Lebens ohne Dichtung." The general idea that underlies the work is that life is like a fairy tale and that God makes curious things happen. "This True Story of his Life will not be found the least interesting of his writings; indeed to me it seems one of the most so. It furnishes the key as it were to all the rest ." Translator's preface. The autobiography is written in the same wonderful language and with the same straightforward mystique that characterizes H.C. Andersen's other writings and the person H.C.A. cannot be said to be less interesting or intriguing than his fairy tales. "My life is a lovely story happy and full of incident. If when I was a boy and went forth into the world poor and friendless a good fairy had met me and said "Choose now thy own course through life ." the initiating lines of Chapter one. <br>H.C. Andresen wrote his autobiography while travelling in Europe. Numerous interruptions appeared and Andersen sent the sheets of the manuscript off to the publisher as they were written which meant that he did not have the earlier parts of the work with him when he wrote the latter. The work also much exceeded the length that he had intended. The manuscript was written in Danish and was translated into English and German the year after he had finished the final sheets August 1846. For this work he only worked on one single manuscript and made all of the numerous corrections directly in this meaning that it was exceedingly difficult to read and that it could not be sent to a translator straight away. The publisher had been told to send the sheets of the manuscript directly to his friend and financial advisor Edvard Collin as they arrived and Collin realizing that no stranger would be able to read the manuscript made a fair copy of the entire manuscript correcting all of Andersen's linguistic and stylistic errors. In return he got to keep the manuscript which is why it was still in existence almost 100 years later when the first Danish edition of it was to be printed. Andersen borrowed his manuscript from Collin when some years later he had to deliver a Danish autobiography for the edition of his collected works. He used it as the basis for "Mit Livs Eventyr" The Fairy Tale of My Life" which appeared in his collected works in 1854-55 but which is much different from the present and principal autobiography. hardcover

W. both half-titles and frontispieces. � Two first editions both containing the first French translations of the present works by Hans Christian Andersen. <br><br>With original handwritten and signed presentations in both volumes from the translator Ernest Gr�goire for Robert Watt.<br><br>Robert Watt 1837-94 was a leading figure in the Danish modernist breakthrough 1870-90 and a famous figure in Danish cultural life in the second half of the 19th century. In spite of the age difference he became closely connected with Hans Christian Andersen and it was he who accompagnied Andersen to the World Exhibition in Paris in 1867. He was also the one to encourage Andersen to have his fairy tales translated into and published in French and he is the one who made this translation happen. Thus this particur presentation copy is of great interest.<br>In his diaries from 1873 and 1874 Andersen fairly frequently writes about the preparation of this translation about Watt and Gregoire. On the 31st of March Vol. X p. 54-55 he writes: "Bes�g af Watt der havde faaet Brev fra den franske Journalist Gregoire der vilde overs�tte og lade illustrere mine Eventyr med Undtagelse af dem Soldi havde udgivet." "Visit by Watt who had received a letter from the French journalist Gregoire who wanted to translate my fairy tales and have them illustrated except for the ones that Soldi had published." own translation . On several occations Andersen worries about the rights to the French translations and he is not happy with the fact that Gregoire apparently claims them. On the 13th of April Vol. X p.64 he writes: "-Hele Dagen Hoste og mit Nerveuse Middag hos Eduard Collin der skrev for mig en Skrivelse til Gregoire efter min Opfattelse og ikke som Watt havde givet mig til Underskrift. Strax paa Aftenen kom Watt og blev ilde stemt ved at jeg ikke vilde underskrive hans Skrivelse sagde at MIN havde ikke Betydning for Loven i Paris jeg forstod ikke hele hans Forklaring og da han vedblev kom jeg i saadan nerveus Stemning at jeg brast i Graad og sank om paa Sophaen." - The entire day cough and my nerves dinner at Eduard Collin who wrote for me a letter for Gregoire according to my conception and not like Watt had given me to sign. Placed in a red cloth cassette. � Very rare first separate translation from the same year as the first English translation by Mary Howitt of Andersen's "Kun en Spillemand". Printed the same year as the first work by Andersen was translated into and printed in English Mary Howitt's translation of "The Improvisatore" 1845. Since Howitt's translation was done from German this is probably the first one to be done from Danish.<br>After having translated "The Improvisatore" Mary Howitt undertook the translation of "Only a Fiddler" and "O.T." which appeared together at Richard Bently's around August 1845 under the title "Only a Fiddler; and O.T. or Life in Denmark. By the Author of "The Improvisatore or Life in Italy." Translated by Mary Howitt. In three volumes." There is no foreword or preface and Andersen's name is not mentioned once in that translation. <br>The preface of this Colburn's translation states: "The manuscript of "ONLY A FIDDLER" was sent to MR. COLBURN long before the "IMPROVISATORE" was announced or probably its successor even contemplated; and declined upon the plea that only MRS. HOWITT'S translation succeed. The date of the transmission to him of the last volume was January 1 1845. In this case then it cannot be said that that lady "had made a public" for ANDERSEN. The coincidence of two foreigners being engaged simultaneously in translating the works of an author who wrote upward of ten years ago proves their sense of his great merits which have found an echo in the English world."<br><br>As early as during the 1830'ies Andersen's works began to appear in German translations and Andersen anxiously kept an eye on the success of his works in other European countries. He was very eager to have his works translated into other European languages and as soon as the German translations began to appear he began thinking about English and Frensch translations. In 1837 he states in a letter to Henriette Hanck: "Gid jeg maate opnaa den Gl�de at en af mine Romaner kom ud paa Engelsk; det ville forn�ie mig s�rdeles; dog paa Fransk skaffes nok flest L�sere." Bredsdorff Andersen og England p. 42 i.e.: I wish to gain the pleasure of one of my novels appearing in English; it would bring me great joy; though in French there will probably be more people to read it." own translation.<br><br>The honour of introducing Andersen and his writings to England and the English speaking market befell Mary Howitt the famous English poet and translator. She had learned German on some of her trips to Germany and Austria and through German translations she got aquanted with the name of Hans Christian Andersen and during the winter of 1844-45 she translated into English the very first of Andersen's works to appear in this language "The Improvisatore.". Andersen had received a copy of it even before Mary Howitt sent him one along with a letter in which she among other things says the following: "But it was not Sweden alone which had rich treasures of literature - there was the same in Denmark and even before Ingemann we placed the name of Andersen. In February this translation of your Improvisatore was published - and I am glad to say it has made you many friends. Your name is now an honoured one in England. I am sorry not to be able to send you a copy of "Only a Fiddler" and "O.T." which will be published at the end of this month." In: Bredsdoff Andersen og England p. 45. hardcover
