Howe, E.R.J. Gambier F.S.A.; Colvin, Sidney (Preface)
Catalogue of British and American Book Plates (Bookplates) Bequeathed to the Trustees of the British Museum By Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks - Franks Bequest: Volume III (Three/3) Only, S-Z, Supplements
Bookplate of V.M. Turnbull inside front board suggests this copy may have belonged to the owner of the famous collection now held by the Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge. Bookplate of Hugh John McLean upon front free endpaper. [6], 387 pages. All six plates present. "Includes several minor and supplementary series, viz., one of about two hundred anonymous plates which it has not been found possible to identify; Royal plates; plates of Universities, Colleges and Schools; Premium or school-prize plates; plates of Ecclesiastical, Parochial, and Public Libraries; Naval and Military and Legal and Medical plates; with those of City Companies and Public Offices, Booksellers, and Circulating Libraries. The volume also furnishes notes of a few family plates supplementary to the main series: these have for the most part been discovered in and transferred from the Foreign portion of the testator's collection. Last comes a Heraldic Index to all those plates which, although anonymous, have been identified and inserted in their proper alphabetical places in the main collection." - from Preface. The entire catalogued Franks bequest contained 35,098 plates. Above-average wear to publisher's black cloth. Binding intact. Innumerable small light pencil marginal tick marks beside items of interest. Intriguing light pencil annotation beside item 32550A, a reproduction of a James Worsley plate, on page 319 reads "a copy of the original is in my collection", possibly adding further weight to the suggested provenance of this volume. Volume III only of this renowned three volume reference. Book

Hubbard, Elbert
Roycroft The Philistine lot of 78 copies; : A Periodical of Protest
East Aurora New York: The Roycroft Print Shop. 1898-1914. Softcover. Very Good. Edges and corners have wear and occasional chipping there is occasional small loss to paper surfaces different qualities of paper used in the magazine have different degrees of tanning and some exterior surfaces are soiled.; The Philistine: A Periodical of Protest was a pioneering "little magazine" that was the next step up from "pamphleting" in the United States. Co-founded by Elbert Hubbard of Roycroft The Philistine was a vehicle for his thoughts rants repackaged thoughts of others and advertising that made it one of Roycroft's few self-sustaining periodicals. The Philistine published essays and other small works by various authors but most content was stated as being written by Fra Elbertus Elbert Hubbard. It's clear that staff writers wrote the majority of advertising copy that stressed the value of cars furs olives rubber tile and razor blades socks and soap typewriters tonics and tooth powders. Roycroft-produced goods were heavily promoted and one could order leather and metal goods plus furniture from their shops. Roycroft books were always advertised including some that later scholarship determined were never produced as stated. The magazine was economical to produce and simple to the point of being crude. Butcher paper covers were printed in black and red with an occasional green capital and interior text was in black with the occasional leading capital in red. Other than the advertisements there were no illustrations accompanying the text. The back covers however were an opportunity for Roycroft's best illustrators to create caricatures that lampooned the government the military organized religion social movements and the various follies of our society. Known figures in the Roycroft community were subjects of more gentle humor in these caricatures. This lot of The Philistine is 78 copies. Back covers typically have "Roycroft mottos" or aphorisms framed in Kelmscott style. A very occasional back cover advertisement. Dates of publication are generally 1898 through 1914. No volume year is a complete run of that year. These 6" tall chapbooks have string sewn binding that is holding well but are in a condition typical for this ephemeral 10-cent little magazine that was not intended to last. Conditions vary from Very Good- to Very Good.; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 40 pages . The Roycroft Print Shop paperback
