Brooke, J M S
Under the Lantern of "Our Lady of woolnoth" Being a Few Lectures on the Various Epiphanies of God: Together with Some Others for the Most Part Delivered in the Above Church
London: London: Printed By Bowles and Sons George Street Mansion House E.C. 1887. Fine Binding. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Size 8¾" x 6¾" 184 pages. Burgundy leather fine binding with 2 thick gilt frames and large diagonal gilt title on the front cover gilt frames on the back cover. gilt lines on the cover edges and tiny little gilt flowers on the inner turn-ins. 5 raised bands to the spine with gilt title in the second compartment and gilt flower motifs and corner pieces in the other compartments. All pages edged with thick bright gilt. On thick cream paper the texts are printed in a red border on each page with titles at the head of each page in large ornate font and vignettes and red initial capitals at the start of each chapter. Condition near fine front hinge repaired else fine contents very clean a very attractive book. I could not find another copy of this book for sale at this time nor much information about the author J.M.S. Brooke though there is this copy of a letter he wrote to the editor of The Times in 1888 "Sir -- Paying my daily visit to my church this afternoon I was surprised to find the caretaker in a semi-stupified state. Asking her what was the matter she told me that a man had just entered the church and finding her all alone inquired whether I was in the vestry. On receiving a reply in the negative he said "I see you are alone" and immediately took out a pocket-handkerchief and dashed it in her face. The strong smell of whatever liquid it had been steeped in dazed and stupefied her and she for a moment or two lost her consciousness. The noise of some of the workmen on the roof seemed to have alarmed this scoundrel and he bolted out of the church. This incident Sir perhaps might afford a clue. At any rate it will warn solitary women who are in charge of churches. I am Sir your obedient servant J. M. S. BROOKE. Vestry of St. Mary Woolnoth and St. Mary Woolchurch Haw Lombard-street E.C. <br/> <br/> London: Printed By Bowles and Sons, George Street, Mansion House, E.C. unknown

S'abadeb The Gifts: Pacific Coast Salish Art and Artists
Ex-library book with the usual stamps, stickers, etc. Binding is solid and text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Book shows little to no wear to covers only. Interior is Fine save library markings. From the flyleaf: "The Gifts captures the essence of Coast Salish culture through its artistry, oral traditions, and history. Developed in conjunction with the first extensive exhibition of the art and culture of the Coast Salish peoples of Washington State and British Columbia, the book traces the development of Salish art from prehistory to the present. Sculpture in wood, stone, and bone--including monumental house posts--as well as expertly crafted basketry, woven regalia, and contemporary works in glass, print media, and painting showcase a sweeping artistic tradition and its contemporary vibrant manifestations.S'abadeb is the Lushootseed term for "gifts" and invokes a principle at the heart of Salish sculpture: reciprocity, both in the public and spiritual domains. This richly symbolic word expresses the importance of giving gifts at potlatches, of giving thanks during first food ceremonies, of the creativity bestowed upon artists and other leaders, and of the roles of the master artists, oral historians, and cultural leaders in passing vital cultural information to the next generations. The theme of S'abadeb and practices of reciprocal exchange in Salish society are illuminated here through the intersection of art with ceremony, oral traditions, the land, and contemporary realities." Contents by the authors listed above include: Storied arts: lushootseed gifting across time and space, Kwulasulwut: teachings of the past, treasures of the future, Traditional teachings about coast Salish art , The recognition of coast Salish art, how did it all get there? tracing the path of Salish art in collections, A dialogue about coast salish aesthetics, Remembrance, symbols of identity, containers for knowledge and memories, Objects of function and beauty: basketry of the Southern Coast Salish, Weaving in beauty, weaving in time, More than transportation: the traditional canoes of Puget Sound, et. al. 279 pages with large color plates throughout.
