Pp.viii288; publisher’s 32pp. Catalogue on text-paper dated 1879 and including a note Dated July 1st 1879 referring to the decease of Mr. Hardwicke the change of style of the business from Hardwicke and Bogue to that of David Bogue and its removal from 192 Piccadilly to No.3 St. Martin’s Place from that date at end; four entry Errata slip tipped in after Preface; bevelled brown smooth cloth ruled black on sides and spine blocked and lettered black on front cover lettered and blocked with publisher’s monogram within square ruled box gilt on spine; t.e. uncut others mainly trimmed; end-papers faced black. Very slight cracking to end-papers; otherwise a fine copy. Hoppé 12: the first issue copies bound up later being without the catalogue. Hoppé however describes the end-papers as dark green. If this is correct there must have been at least three binding batches and it appears that some unsold copies also passed to Longmans who re-issued them in 1890 with a cancel title-page making a total of four possible states or issues. The number bound however seems to have been in all no more than about 300 copies: 272 had been sold by 1899 at which point Butler had himself only about five copies left and he could get no more the stock of sheets having been destroyed some years before in a fire at the printers v. letter of Jan. 3rd 1900 from Butler to Robert Bridges quoted by Hoppé. One of the scarcest of Butler’s first editions in any of its several incarnations - decidedly so in virtually fine first issue state as here.
