Bound in period full leather with red labels with plain end papers. Inscribed in ink by �Henry Monkton�. In excellent condition. Berquin 1747-1791 specialized in writing childhood literature this was unusual in this period. His children's books enjoyed great popularity and were often reprinted throughout the nineteenth century in many languages. Percy Muir lists the first English translation �L�Ami des Enfants�� 1782-3 being published in 1786 in 24 volumes. This was printed a year later. These morality stories for children by the French author and poet Arnaud Berquin 1747-1791 originally appeared in monthly installments in a magazine called L' Ami Des Enfans. The tales were so popular they were collected and published together in French and English. Berquin's work is notable for its realism and lack of fantasy - no castles or supernatural powers are found within these pages. He wrote with the "conviction that children should be addressed directly in language they could readily understand."
