BOSWELL, James
The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson L.L.D.
Philadelphia: John F. Watson 1810. Hardcover. 8vo. Rebound in modern brown cloth with gilt spine lettering. xvi 414pp. Very good overall. Rebind is pristine and fresh while text block is moderately age toned and foxed sporadically throughout with bit of old dampstain to preliminary leaves. First American edition of this travelogue originally published in London in 1785 -- here "From the London Edition Revised and Corrected by the Author." Two versions of the first edition were published in 1810 and since both the other being New York/Boston Inskeep and Bradford were printed by R. & W. Carr of Philadelphia and differ only in title page it's arguable that Philly publisher Watson's copies hit the bookshops sooner than those shipped to New York and Boston -- not a certain precedence though so either imprint are considered first editions. Interestingly remounted to the front pastedown is the late 19th century "Library of the Young Men's Christian Association" bookplate of Harrisburg Pennsylvania -- which explains the printed "Bequest of the / Hon. Simon Cameron" label above this for when Lincoln's Secretary of War and Pennsylvania senator died in 1877 he was buried in Harrisburg and apparently his books were bequested to the local YMCA. Though rebound a decent and quite handleable first with an intriguing provenance. SHAW AND SHOEMAKER 19607. John F. Watson hardcover

BOSWELL, James
The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson LL.D. Containing Some Poetical Pieces by Dr. Johnson relative to the Tour and never before published; a Series of his Conversation Literary Anecdotes and Opinions of Men and Books: with an Authentick Account of the Distresses and Escape of the Grandson of King James II. In the Year 1746.
1785. London: Printed by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly. 1785. 8vo. Contemporary calf spine decorated in gilt and with red morocco lettering-piece; pp. vii 524 2 errata and advertisement for the Life a little wear to binding marginal offsetting from endpapers to initial and final two leaves; a very good copy with mid-century bookplate of William Binns Cowper physician and collector.First edition an early state with uncorrected mis-spelling on p. 121 however with the indication of second state with leaves E3 and E4 as cancels M4 not cancelled. Complete with half-title and errata.'Though the Life is a vaster and richer piece of work no one will maintain that it displays Boswell's unique gift for biography better than the Tour. Indeed most lovers of Boswell will agree that the Tour as a whole is more consistently good than the Life; that is that nowhere in the Life could one find so many consecutive first-class pages as those that compose this book' Pottle. The printed book is almost identical with the actual journal that was kept in 1773. When Johnson's death made it possible for Boswell to publish the manuscript he only added an introduction and a conclusion before handing it over to the printer. BOSWELL, James [JOHNSON, Samuel]
The Journal of A Tour to The Hebrides with Samuel Johnson LL.D. Containing Some Poetical Pieces by Dr. Johnson Relative to The Tour and never before published: A Series of his Conversation Literary Anecdotes and Opinions of Men and Books: With an Authentick Account of The Distresses and Escape of The Grandson of King James II in the Year 1746
London: Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly 1786. Third Edition Revised and Corrected. Octavo. 21.5cm. Bound in a rather spectacular 20th century mossy green ripple patterned vellum with a red leather and gilt title label. xv;1; 442pp.;1 ads. Some sunning to spine panel very light wear to extremities clean tight and very striking; internally clean and fresh plain endpapers half title present without map as issued gathering "O" slightly proud and with a pinhole of damage to the title page affecting the "L" in "Journal." a little thumbing and soiling in places otherwise a very good tidy copy in a rather delightful later binding. <br /> <br /> An account by James Boswell of the three-month journey through the Highlands and islands of Scotland that he undertook with Samuel Johnson in 1773. Johnson later published his own version of the expedition A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland in 1775. Johnson perhaps predictably sticks to the improving topographical observation fashionable at the time whereas Boswell's account probably has a case for being the shared ancestor of the Rough Guide/Lonely Planet Guide style of travel writing preferring engaging anecdote and less predictable slightly voyeuristic in places observations both of the people and the places but also of Johnson himself. The retained ad leaf is for Boswell's "Life of Johnson" "Preparing for the Press in one Volume Quarto. Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly unknown

Backstrip sensitively restored boards soiled and worn at edges some dampstaining to front endpapers half title and title some loss to terminal blank bookplate; withal a very pleasing copy in a custom leather box.<br /> <br /> § Second edition revised and corrected. A lovely copy uncut in the original boards and uncommon thus. Pottle notes that the second edition was issued in boards at 6s. and also bound "All copies I have seen are full-bound in calf."<br /> <br /> Boswell's account of a three month tour of the Highlands and islands of Scotland which he made in the company of Samuel Johnson in 1773. Johnson's own account A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland had been published in 1775. While Johnson's book sticks to the sober description of topography and history that was expected from travel books of the time Boswell's book "has the chatty informality of a 'rough' guide: its focus is on Johnson as it describes his charged encounters with the native population whether humble cottagers or important personages like Lord Monboddo and Boswell's formidable father Lord Auchinleck" Oxford DNB.<br /> <br /> "The principal changes made in the second edition besides the correction of some printer's errors are the removal of a few errors of fact and a large number of slight verbal changes in the interest of grammar and elegance; the addition of the Contents two Appendixes and a number of notes explanatory or controversial; and the substitution pp. 165-6 of a softened account of the stay with Sir Alexander Macdonald for the too frank disclosures of the original narrative' Chapman p. xvii.
