James Boswell is best known for the biography he wrote of one of his contemporaries the English literary figure Samuel Johnson which contemporary Johnsonian critic Harold Bloom has claimed is the greatest biography written in the English language. Edited with notes by Percy Fitzgerald. The biography takes many critical liberties with Johnson's life as Boswell makes various changes to Johnson's quotations and even censors many comments. Regardless of these actions modern biographers have found Boswell's biography as an important source of information. The work was popular among early audiences and with modern critics but some of the modern critics believe that the work cannot be considered a proper biography. Prize bookplate to front pastedown. With engraved title pages and frontispieces. John Wilson Croker 1780 - 1857 was a politician and writer. Croker published a new edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson including the Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides which was vindictively attacked by Macaulay in the Edinburgh Review but which remained the best edition until superseded by the work of George Birkbeck Hill -ODNB. Condition: The bindings aresomewhat tight and firm with several instances of the cords exposed. The outer hinges are starting. The frontispiece and title page of volume one are partially detached. The inner hinges are very slightly strained. There is some wear to the extremities including some bumping with sunning to the spines and some loss. The cloth of the spine of volumesfourand five aresplit with some sections loose. Internally the pages have some browning with intermittents spots or marks. There are occasional tidemarks prominent to thefirst and last pages oftento the inner margins and only slightly affecting the text. There are institutional bookplates to the front pastedowns with withdrawn ink stamps to the front pastedowns verso of the title pages and . Overall the condition is good only. On Crokers edition of Boswells Life of Johnson it is commented that In 1831 Croker published a new edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson including the Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides which was vindictively attacked by Macaulay in the Edinburgh Review but which remained the best edition until. . . the work of George Birkbeck Hill and that his research has been invaluable to later historians. DNBDr Samuel Johnson 1709 1784 was an English author. Beginning as a Grub Street journalist he made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet essayist moralist novelist literary critic biographer editor and lexicographer. Johnson was a devout Anglican and political conservative. Samuel Johnson is probably most famous for his dictionary. James Boswell 1740 1795 was a lawyer diarist and author born in Edinburgh Scotland; he is best known for his biography of Samuel Johnson. His name has passed into the English language as a term Boswell Boswellian Boswellism for a constant companion and observer. John Wilson Croker 1780 1857 was a British statesman and author. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin where he graduated in 1800. Immediately afterwards he entered Lincoln's Inn and in 1802 he was called to the Irish bar. His interest in the French Revolution led him to collect a large number of valuable documents on the subject now in the British Museum. In 1809 Croker was appointed as secretary to the Admiralty. Many of his political speeches were published in pamphlet form. He was for many years one of the leading contributors on literary and historical subjects to the Quarterly Review with which he had been associated from its foundation. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography comments that He had a wide appreciation of all varieties of literature and art which made him a valuable intermediary between the politicians and the public and he was an able writer lucid fluent and always well informed. Condition: The bindings are firm. Theinnerhinges of volumes 1 4 and 5 are strained. The boards of volume 1are starting. There is wear to the extremities including bumping and discolouration to the boards. The spine labels have some small sections missing as shown above. Internally the pages are generally bright with occasional spotting. There are institutional labels on the front pastedown with institutional ink stamps to the verso of the title page and the final page of text in each volume. Overall the condition is very good. To which are added anecdotes by Hawkins Piozzi Murphy Tyers Reynolds Steevens &c. and Notes by Various Hands. There are Robinsons bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Some pages are unopened. Condition: The bindings are generally tight and firm although becoming loose in places. The inner hinges are strained. There are splits to the outerhinges of some volumes with the spines coming away. The top of the spine of volume 7 is missing. There is wear to the extremities including bumping and rubbing with sunning to the spines and discoloured marks. Internally the pages have some browning with the occasional spot. With institutional labels from Queen Mary College to the frontpastedowns and free-endpapers and 'withdrawn' ink stamps to the verso of title pages. James Boswell 9th Laird of Auchinleck 29 October 1740 19 May 1795 was a lawyer diarist and author best known forhis biography of Samuel Johnson. First published in 1791 The Life of Samuel Johnson was greatly admired for its unique style; unlike other biographies of the era it directly incorporated conversations that Boswell had noted down at the time for his journals. He also included far more personal details of Johnson than contemporary readers were accustomed to. Instead of writing a respectful and dry record of Johnson's public lifeBoswell painted a vivid portrait of the complete man. It is still often said to be the greatest biography ever written. Condition of the books is VERY GOOD ; mild corner and edge wear with some volumes bumped at corner. Covers very clean and fresh with gilding bright.
