Sir Archibald Spicer Hurd (1869-1959) [ Seeley, Service and Co, London publishers ]:
Sir Archibald Spicer Hurd naval authority. Autograph Letter Signed 'A S H.' to 'Mr Service' of the publishers Seeley & Co. complaining about the severity of a proposed contract for a series of articles.
On letterhead of 6 Stafford Terrace Plymouth. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. Written in pencil. A long and interesting complaint casting an interesting light on the journalistic practices of the period. Hurd begins without preamble pointing out with reference to a previous letter that he 'never promised 35000 words' and stating that the publisher 'would doubtless be able to put in a few extra illustrations to fill it out'. Regarding a proposed 'libel clause' he states that 'it may be & is in fact only a matter of form but as Mr <Kearny> required no such undertaking when I agreed verbally to write the articles he trusting me as I trusted him & I cannot see any way now to sign any such undertaking'. He points out that he has never had such a request made to him despite having 'had business with a large number of the principal publishers & have written for various publications of your <> for years'. He concludes with the complaint: 'It seems to me that you are asking me to bind myself very severely down for a matter off £15'. Hurd was author of the official 'History of the Merchant Navy in the War of 1914-19' under the auspices of the Historical Section of the Committee of Imperial Defence and of numerous other works on naval matters. He contributed numerous naval and other articles to the Fortnightly Review Nineteenth Century and other English and American publications. He was on the editorial staff of the Daily Telegraph from 1899 to 1928 and was Joint Editor of Brassey's Naval and Shipping Annual 1922-28. His brother Sir Percy Angier Hurd 1864-1950 was also a journalist and a Conservative MP for more than thirty years. His great-nephew is the former Tory cabinet minister Douglas Hurd. On letterhead of 6 Stafford Terrace, Plymouth. unknown

Sir Theodore Martin (1816-1909), Scottish poet and author, husband of actress Helena Faucit [Sir A M M Stedman of publishers Met
Sir Theodore Martin Scottish poet and author. Three Autograph Letters Signed: to A. M. M. Stedman of Methuen ruling out writing his reminiscences; to Rev. Canon Moor of St Clements on a misquotation; to E. J. Broadfield on his wife’s letters.
ONE: To Broadfield. 26 May 1885. 1 Cavendish Place Brighton. TWO: To Moor. 22 April 1889. On letterhead of 31 Onslow Square S.W. London THREE: To Stedman. 15 June 1897. On Onslow Square letterhead. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Both items are in good condition and each folded once. The second carries the merest trace of grey paper from a mount at one corner. ONE: To E. B. Nicholson 3 November 1881. 2pp 12mo. On first leaf of bifolium. Nicholson’s letter has been forwarded to him ‘here in my country house where I am for a few days’. It is out of his power ‘to promise any assistance to your proposed Magazine. I write very little for the press having very scanty leisure - and my time being already forestalled by engagements which will occupy whatever leisure I can spare for literature’. TWO: To ‘Mr. Lowe’. 2pp 12mo. Lowe had presumably published his opinion with regard to the death of Princess Mary of Teck’s fiancé Prince Albert Victor. ‘I cannot refrain from thanking for sic your admirable note last note sic on the vulgar & heartless proposition to make a purse for the Princess Mary as a solatium for her bereavement. What are we coming to that any journal pretending to represent British feeling & opinion should have given place in their columns to such a proposition! I am sure that numberless people who are not dead to the instincts of good feeling will thank you for what you said.’ He knows that some of those who obtained subscriptions ‘for her wedding gifts’ welcomed Lowe’s words ‘with the warmest feeling’. He ends: ‘In many cases all the subscriptions have already been returned to the donor.’ E. B. Nicholson. 3 November 1881. On letterhead of Brintysilio near Llangollen. TWO: To ‘Mr. Lowe’. 24 January 1892. On letterhead of 31 Onslow Square S.W. LondonSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. Both items are in good condition and each folded once. The second carries the merest trace of grey paper from a mount at one corner. ONE: To E. B. Nicholson 3 November 1881. 2pp 12mo. On first leaf of bifolium. He ends: ‘In many cases all the subscriptions have already been returned to the donor.’ See his entry and that of Stedman as Methuen in the Oxford DNB. The three items are in good condition lightly aged the first with traces of tape from mount around edges of its second leaf. ONE: To Edward John Broadfield 1831-1913 of Manchester 26 May 1885. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. He begins by explaining that they are in Brighton for Lady Martin’s health: ‘She still suffers much but is better since we came here rather more than a fortnight since.’ He asks whether it was ‘the Letter on “Imogen†that was addressed to Miss Swanwick’. Two days before he wrote to Broadfield at the Manchester Guardian office ‘to say that the volume containing the whole of Lady Methuen’s letters was to be published this week & expressing a hope that you would review it for the Examiner. It has had every justice done to it in externals & I think you will say it is a very elegant volume.’ Martin hopes it may ‘find favour with Shakespearean scholars’. TWO: To Moor 22 April 1889. 1p 12mo. He thanks him for pointing out his misquotation from Dr Johnson. ‘It is another reminder of the force of Dr Routh’s advice to authors “Verify your quotations.†As a rule adhere to the practice but somehow I seem to have either trusted to my memory in this case or to an inexact Memorandum.’ If he can he will rectify the mistake and will not fail to remember his kindness. THREE: To Stedman 15 June 1897. 1p 12mo. ‘Dear Sir / In reply to your note of the 10th. I have only to say that it is not my intention to publish my Reminiscences at any time.’ ONE: To Broadfield. 26 May 1885. 1 Cavendish Place, Brighton. TWO: To Moor. 22 April 1889. Sir Walter Besant (1836-1901), novelist and historian of London [Alice Westlake (nee Hare); Adam and Charles Black, publishers;
Walter Besant Typed Letter Signed 'Walter Besant' to Mrs Alice Westlake.
13 February 1897; on Adam and Charles Black 'Survey of London' letterhead. 12mo 2 pp. Seventeen lines of text. On lightly aged and creased paper. Attractive arts and crafts letterhead. Sending his 'mosts profound sympathy in the danger which threatens Chelsea'. He will sign 'the paper . with the greatest of pleasure' although he anticipates 'very little good as a possible result'. Suggests a time at which the paper can be sent to him. He doubts whether it will be 'any consolation' but 'the London County Council are at this moment allowing the most beautiful suburb in London namely Frognal to be ruined by the erection of hideous barracks that they call flats. Their architect says that he can do nothing in the matter.' Besant's signature has a diagonal line through it apparently in the same ink and it is not clear whether this is a stylistic flourish or a cancellation by Besant possibly on the letter being returned to him with the papers referred to in the letter. Alice Westlake daughter of Thomas Hare and advocate of proportional representation was the wife of the jurist John Westlake 1828-1913; DNB of River House Chelsea Embankment. 13 February 1897; on Adam and Charles Black 'Survey of London' letterhead. unknown

Sir Walter Newman Flower (1879-1964), proprietor of London publishers Cassell & Co, biographer and literary editor [Thomas Buckl
‘He as good as called me a liar: Sir Walter Newman Flower proprietor of London publishers Cassell’s. Autograph Letter Signed and two Typed Letters Signed to Sir James Marchant complaining of treatment by Thomas B. Wells of New York firm Harpers.
First TLS: 3 January 1928. Second TLS: 11 December 1928. Both on letterheads of Cassell & co. Ltd. La Belle Sauvage London EC4. ALS: 18 December 1928 on letterhead of Idlehurst Sevenoaks. Publishing history does not get more vivid than this. See Flower’s obituary in The Times and Wells’s in the New York Times. The three items in good condition lightly aged. All three folded once and signed ‘Newman Flower’. First TLS 3 January 1928: 1p 12mo. He writes that although ‘a very apologetic letter from Mr. Wells of Harpers’ has ‘cleared the air entirely’ ‘a reply from Holt’ received at the same time is not very satisfactory’ and ‘in view of the fact that Cassell’s and Harpers will be coming together again it would perhaps be as well not to do anything at present’. Second TLS 11 December 1928: Headed ‘CONFIDENTIAL’. He regrets to inform Marchant that he ‘had a very aggressive interview with Mr. Wells of Harper’s in my Club this afternoon . he as good as called me a liar and was so abominably rude that I have decided that I will have no further dealings whatever with Harper’s’. Deleted sentence follows: ‘I have to-day written and cancelled the arrangement with them over “The Real Hellâ€â€™. There are no books ‘coming along in which Harper’s and ourselves are sharing but if so I want to make it clear that I am not prepared to proceed with them’. He does not think this will ‘hamper’ Marchant but asks him not to bring Cassell’s ‘any books in which we must be associated with Harper’s and that you will not offer Harper’s any book of Cassell’s’. He concludes: ‘It takes a great deal really to put me out of temper but I will not be subjected again to such rudeness as I had to put up with from Mr. Wells this afternoon in my own Club.’ ALS 18 December 1928: Begins: ‘Dear Sir James / Have sent you a brace of birds from the chase. Shot on Saturday.’ He wishes the Marchants ‘better health in 1929’ hoping that it will be one of Marchant’s ‘Years of good fortune’. He ends by stating that he appreciates ‘more than I can say all you have done to help things along this year’. First TLS: 3 January 1928. Second TLS: 11 December 1928. Both on letterheads of Cassell & co. Ltd., La Belle Sauvage, London, EC unknown
