Paris: Somogy editions d'art 2005. Hardbound. As New. Black cloth with color glossy pictorial dustjacket. 125 pp. over 70 mostly color plates and illustrations. Text is in French. Published to accompany an exhibition that was made up of 44 works. Extensive annotations provide original scholarship and research. The Greuze Museum acquired the only preparatory study preserved for the reception piece of Jean-Baptiste Greuze 1725-1805 at the Academy: Septimius Severus reproaching his son Caracalla for having wanted to assassinate him in the parades of Scotland. The book reveals the painter's intentions and the reasons for his failure at the Academy to reveal the ideological fabric and the theoretical stakes of the case. The Septimus Severus now preserved in the Louvre marks a decisive step in the career of Jean-Baptiste Greuze 1725-1805. Then famous for his portraits and scenes of everyday life Greuze decides to paint contrary to all expectations a painting of history for his reception piece at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture: Septimius Severus reproaching Caracalla for his Son of having wished to assassinate him in the defiles of Scotland. This major work considered as one of the first milestones of neoclassicism provoked intense controversy during its presentation at the Academy on August 23 1769 and then at the Salon a few days later. This work published on the occasion of the bicentennial of the death of the painter reopens the file of the very famous affair of Septimius Severus one of the cruel episodes of the life of Greuze. - from the Somogy web site.
