The book reveals the painter's intentions and the reasons for his failure at the Academy to reveal the ideological fabric and the theoretical stakes of the case. The Septimus Severus now preserved in the Louvre marks a decisive step in the career of Jean-Baptiste Greuze 1725-1805. Then famous for his portraits and scenes of everyday life Greuze decides to paint contrary to all expectations a painting of history for his reception piece at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture: Septimius Severus reproaching Caracalla for his Son of having wished to assassinate him in the defiles of Scotland. This major work considered as one of the first milestones of neoclassicism provoked intense controversy during its presentation at the Academy on August 23 1769 and then at the Salon a few days later.
