‎Jacob Cats? Landschaftsmalerei war von den niederländischen Meistern des 17. Jahrhunderts geprägt. So hatten u.a. Vorbildcharakter der in Leiden tätige J. van Goyen (1596-1656) oder der Haarlemer Maler S. van Ruisdael (um 1600-1670) und deren Nachfolger J. van Ruisdael (um 1628-1682) und A. Cuyp (1629-1692). Wie auf unserer Schilderung einer heiteren pastoralen Szene zu beobachten, widmete Cats der Lichtinszenierung, differenzierten Licht- und Schattenwerten, besondere Aufmerksamkeit. Jacob Cats war der Sohn eines in Deutschland tätigen niederländischen Buchhändlers, der nach dem Tod seiner Frau, kurz nach der Geburt Jacobs, in die Niederlande zurückkehrte und nach Amsterdam zog. Hier absolvierte der Künstler ab 1760 eine Ausbildung als Buchbinder und Graphiker bei dem Kupferstecher A. Starre (vor 1701-vor 1778) und dem Zeichner und Radierer P. Louw (1725-um 1800). Nach einer weiteren Ausbildung bei G. van Rossum (um 1699-1772) arbeitete er über drei Jahre als Tapetenmaler in der Amsterdamer Tapetenfabrik von J.H. Troost van Groenendoelen (um 1725-um 1794). Dann machte er sich mit einer eigenen Tapetenfabrik mit Unterstützung des mit ihm verwandten Architekturmalers und Graphikers W. Writs (um 1734-vor 1786) sowie den befreundeten Künstlern J. de Bosch (Geb.- und Todesdat. unbek.) und J. Goll van Franckenstein d.Ä. (1722-1785) erfolgreich selbständig. Nebenher fand er zunehmend als Zeichner von Landschaftsbildern und topographischen Ansichten, auch als Kopierer berühmter Gemälde, beim Publikum breite Anerkennung und konnte schließlich seinen Lebensunterhalt allein damit bestreiten. Ebenso betätigte er sich als Maler, jedoch in geringerem Maße. Seine letzten vier Lebensjahre waren von Krankheit gezeichnet.‎

‎Il Libro dell'Arte wordt binnen de kunst- en restauratiewereld beschouwd als het absolute standaardwerk op het gebied van de oude schildertechnieken. Het is het best bewaarde middeleeuwse traktaat over kunst en wordt vermeld in zowat alle studies over schilder- en restauratietechniek. Over Cennino d'Andrea Cennini (1360?-1427?) is maar weinig bekend. Hij zou geboren zijn omstreeks 1360 in Colle di Val d'Elsa, een stadje in de provincie Siena. Cennino leerde de beginselen van het kunstambacht bij zijn vader Andrea en trok hierna naar de werkplaats van Agnolo Gaddi in Florence, waar hij tien jaar bleef. Vanaf 1388 vinden we hem terug bij de uitvoering van de Sint-Stefanusreeks in de Sint-Lucchesekerk in de buurt van Poggibonsi. Vervolgens vestigt hij zich in Padua waar hij zijn beroemde boek schrijft. Van Il Libro dell'Arte zijn drie manuscripten overgeleverd. Deze Nederlandse vertaling berust op de oudste en meest originele versie: een afschrift uit 1437 dat gekopieerd werd door een gevangene in de Florentijnse Carcere delle Stinche. Il Libro dell'Arte is niet alleen interessant door de overzichtelijke manier waarop de schildertechnieken worden uitgelegd, maar ook vanwege de tijdgeest die uit het werk blijkt. Cennino's verfijnde nuanceringen en zijn gedegen vakkennis maken dit boek tot een uniek document dat zowel voor de hedendaagse schilders en restaurateurs als voor de kunstliefhebber veel te genieten biedt.‎

‎Huis Schuylenburch is een gebouw in barok-stijl uit 1715 aan de Lange Vijverberg in Den Haag, met uitzicht over de Hofvijver. Het behoort tot de Top 100 van de Rijksdienst voor de Monumentenzorg . Het is een ontwerp van Dani l Marot. Met name de top van de gevel is bijzonder. Felix du Sart had de leiding over de bouw van Schuylenburch. Het huis werd bewoond door Cornelis van Schuylenburch (1683?1763). Zijn broer Johan was zo onder de indruk van dit huis dat hij zijn eigen huis aan de Korte Vijverberg (het huidige Kabinet der Koningin) in 1724 liet verbouwen in de stijl van Dani l Marot. Het gebouw is sinds 1885 in gebruik als residentie van de Duitse ambassadeur.‎

The stream of successive panels - suspended 2 to 7 meters above the river - will be interrupted by bridges, rocks, trees and bushes while wide clearance between the banks and the edges of the translucent fabric panels, will allow sunlight to illuminate the river. As with all previous art projects, Over the River is entirely financed by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, through the sale of preparatory work. ‎De twintigste-eeuwse Japanse prentkunst heeft relatief weinig aandacht gekregen. Klassieke landschappen van Hokusai en Hiroshige en de prachtige vrouwenafbeeldingen van Utamaro blijven de dominante vorm. Toch tonen musea en particuliere verzamelaars sinds de jaren negentig een groeiende belangstelling voor shin hanga ('nieuwe prenten'): uitgebalanceerde ontwerpen gedrukt op luxueus papier, met de fijnste pigmenten en in kleinere oplagen.
