Tirage limité à 1160 exemplaires, celui-ci sur numéroté vélin de Rives.Rouveyre tente de mettre en avant l’unité paradoxale de deux écrivains « adversaires » et pourtant « solidaires ». Dans les deux premiers chapitres (« Le sens moral permanent contre l'épidémie romantique » et « Gourmont, Gide, la religion, le symbolisme, Mallarmé »), il file le parallèle entre deux hommes nourris d'un même environnement faisant de l'un « un singulier diable dissolu » et de l'autre un « réfractaire rongeant son frein » (p. 36). Puis l'association quelque peu artificielle se délie pour laisser place à deux portraitures séparées par la suite des lithographies. « Les écrivains impérissables de chaque époque sont, inconsciemment, les représentations de ses tourments ; tandis que les interrogateurs moraux en sont les contemplateurs et les mesureurs. Leur raison retrouve et conserve la norme. André Gide fut l'un et l'autre. » (p. 134).
