‎Edition originale de ce titre un peu trompeur : ce ne sont pas des "souvenirs" personnels, mais une anthologie poétique un peu développée, dont le principal intérêt est de reproduire des pièces d'auteurs mineurs ou très peu connus. — "(...) Notre choix, dans cette foule de génies ou de talents, n’a pas été difficile. Nous l’avons fait aussi large que l’exigeait leur nombre. A l’exception de quelques-uns, qui n’ont pas suffisamment marqué, ou de quelques autres d’une fougue et d’une fantaisie trop excentriques : Lassailly, par exemple , Philothée O’Neddy, Petrus Borel, etc., tous y ont trouvé place pour des extraits de leurs œuvres, dans la proportion à laquelle leur donnait droit leur renommée. La notice sur chacun a été écrite avec autant de soin que possible et contient assez de détails pour que l’on puisse avoir ainsi, par fragments, l’histoire du Romantisme et de ses Cénacles : le grand qui siégeait chez Victor Hugo, à la place Royale ; l’autre, moins magistral, qui faisait son joyeux tapage à l’impasse du Doyenné, chez Théophile Gautier. C’étaient des écoles irrégulières : on en faisait partie un jour, on s’en échappait le lendemain, pour y revenir à sa fantaisie ; et, somme toute, on ne cessait pas d’être indépendant..." (Préface) — Par Edouard Fournier (1819-1880), auteur dramatique, historien, bibliographe et bibliothécaire. Issu d'une famille d'artistes serruriers, il fait ses études au collège d'Orléans pour se consacrer ensuite tout entier à des travaux littéraires. Après une première pièce de théâtre en 1841, et quelques feuilletons parus dans le journal Le Loiret en 1842, il publie de très nombreuses études historiques, littéraires, bibliographiques et théâtrales. Il édite de nombreux auteurs tout en continuant à écrire pour la scène. Il contribue aussi un grand nombre d'articles à l’Encyclopédie universelle, au Supplément du Dictionnaire de la conversation, à l’Historire des villes de France, au Moniteur, au Constitutionnel, à L'Illustration, à La Revue française, au journal Le Théâtre, dont il est rédacteur en chef de 1853 à 1855.‎
