"This is the first full-length critical study of Smollett in the light of the tradition in which he wrote. It is concerned with the formal organisation of social criticism in fiction. The early chapters of the book deal with the picaresque writing in Spain France and Germany and with English prose fiction of the 17th century. There is a criticism of the standards applied to criticism of the novel before 1750 thus enabling us to see the relevance of what Smollett was trying to do.
