Discours prononcez dans l'Académie Françoise, le lundi 9 mai MDCCXLVI [1746] à la réception de Monsieur de Voltaire.
In-4 (264 x 200 mm), demi-veau fauve, dos lisse orné de doubles filets dorés en place des nerfs, pièce de titre de maroquin havane, daté en pied (rel. moderne), 35 p. titre inclus, vignette de titre, bandeaux et culs-de-lampe. Édition originale, publiée chez Coignard, imprimeur de l'Académie française, du célèbre discours que Voltaire prononça lors de sa réception. Élu à l'unanimité le 2 mai 1746 en remplacement de Jean Bouhier et reçu par son ancien maître l'abbé d'Olivet le 9 mai suivant, Voltaire prononça ce discours purement littéraire conçu comme une contribution "au progrès des arts", en évitant toute allusion aux questions polémiques. Il y mêle habilement éloges, remerciements et critique littéraire. Lors des rééditions, Voltaire intitulera ce discours: "Des effets de la poésie sur le génie des langues". Le titre de départ porte : "M. de Voltaire, historiographe de France, ayant été élu par MM. de l'Académie françoise à la place de feu M. le Président Bouhier, y vint prendre séance le lundi 9 mai 1746, et prononça le discours qui suit". À la suite: "Réponse de M. l'abbé d'Olivet, directeur de l'Académie françoise, au discours prononcé par M. de Voltaire." (Bengesco, 1593. Voltaire à la BN, n°3780). Bel exemplaire, très frais, grand de marges, imprimé sur papier fort, parfaitement conservé, très bien relié.

Réunion de 2 ouvrages: 1/Réimpression d'un récit d'un voyage allégorique au "Temple du Goût", critiques d'artistes et d'écrivains alternant vers et prose, publié par VOLTAIRE (1694-1778) à Amsterdam (Desbordes, 1733) avec mention d' "Edition véritable donnée par l'auteur": texte précédé de la "Lettre de Mr. de V... à Mr. de C...", lettre de VOLTAIRE à son ami Cideville, répondant aux reproches faits à une anonyme 1ère version, impertinente ou flatteuse à l'excès, parue la même année chez Jore, à Rouen: "Qui loue tout n’eft qu’un flateur: celui-là seul fçait louer, qui loue avec reftriction", et suivi de l'"Approbation" de 1733 signée Crébillon ("approbation" que l'auteur obtint pour cette 2nde version) mais sans privilège; notes. There is an illustration of Yeats from an engraving by Sargent on the title page. Blue cloth covered boards with embossed decoration to the front gilt lettering to the spine and gilt top edges to the pages. In clean and sound condition apart from a rust mark from a paper clip to the top of the page between the front free end paper and the half title page. The erratum slip is present. Slight wear / bumping to the edges of the boards. Included with this copy is a hand-written letter on "The Nation" letterhead requesting a review of the book and signed by Frank Gallagher of Irish nationalism fame.
