The present work is the only catalogue to list in full the citations of all 640 Victoria Crosses on display and is considerably scarcer than the abridged 39pp version. (Quelques rousseurs et froissements ; très petits trous dans certaines marges sans gravité ; feuillets blancs d'origine jaunis). AGREABLE RELIURE MODERNE. [Ouvrage cité par VICAIRE, t. I, p. 754, col. 2 et p. 755, col. 1]. C'est l'un des 12 volumes appartenant à la collection : "Bibliothèque des Mémoires relatifs à l'Histoire de France". En 1865, Jouaust avait déjà édité des Mémoires de la Duchesse de Brancas sur Louis Quinze et Mme de Châteauroux (avec préface et notes par Louis Lacour). Il nous faut préciser que les "Mémoires" en question ne sont en réalité que le fragment d'un texte plus ample que la Duchesse avait dicté à son fils peu de temps avant de mourir. Certains feuillets appartenant au manuscrit d'origine furent, semble - t - il, égarés au cours de la Révolution. La partie subsistante fut publiée pour la 1ère fois à l'initiative de Louis - Léon - Félicité de Brancas (1733 - 1824), Duc de Lauraguais, petit - fils de Mme de Brancas et amant de Sophie Arnould, dans un recueil intitulé : Lettres de L. - B. Lauraguais à Madame ***, dans lesquelles on trouve des jugements sur quelques ouvrages ; la Vie de l'abbé de Voisenon, une conversation de Chamfort sur l'abbé Sieyès, etc. (A Paris, Chez Buisson, 1802). C'est à cette véritable édition originale, tirée à petit nombre et devenue rare dès le XIXe siècle, que se référèrent les Goncourt et Jules Michelet pour décrire certains aspects de la Cour de France sous Louis XV. La réimpression des Mémoires par Eugène Asse inclut les notes primitives de 1802, accompagnées d'éclaircissements nouveaux. On y trouve en guise de compléments les lettres de Mme de Châteauroux à Mme de Vintimille, sa soeur (d'après les documents conservés à la Bibliothèque Nationale, à la Bibliothèque de Rouen et les copies faites par les Goncourt, Faur et Soulavie). Ont été regroupés dans un appendice : le portrait de Mme de Châteauroux par Sénac de Meilhan, le récit de sa mort par Soulavie et des extraits des Mémoires secrets pour servir à l'Histoire de Perse (Amsterdam, 1745), livre à clés que l'on a attribué au gré des époques à Antoine Pecquet, au chevalier de Rességuier, à Mme de Vieux - Maisons, à Crébillon fils, à La Beaumelle, ou encore, à Voltaire. C'est grâce à l'intervention de la Duchesse du Maine, dont elle était la favorite, que Marie - Angélique Fremyn de Moras épousa le 14 décembre 1709 le Duc de Villars - Brancas, qui n'était autre que le petit - neveu du comte Charles de Brancas (1618 - 1681), célèbre distrait que La Bruyère a portraituré sous le nom de Ménalque dans ses Caractères. Les Mémoires de la Duchesse de Brancas se rapportent aux années 1742 à 1744 au cours desquelles Mme de Châteauroux succéda à sa soeur Mme de Mailly dans le coeur du roi Louis XV.‎

His heroic entreprise was mentioned in a radio speech by Presiden Roosevelt and he received the Navy Cross for great bravery. Ma movie, produced by Cecil B. DeMille was produces with as main character Gary Cooper as Dr. Wassell. Good copy. (some minor stains on lower outer cover).‎

Lithographed, drawn and designed by Newerbach Riffarth. Official entirely lithographed dutch language Charter, with chromolithographed Royal Dutch State Coat-of-Arms at top margin, presented to a Dutch army fuselier from frisian ancestry, who won a military service medal for gallantry during the so-called Lombo expedition 26 June-december 24, 1894. Actually awarded by Royal Dutch Decree March 17, 1896. Very well preserved copy. Rare.
