Il suo primo libro, "La Santa Rossa", un romanzo storico scritto nel 1929, non ha successo. Il secondo romanzo, invece, "Pian della Tortilla" (1935), gli fa ottenere il primo premio letterario, la medaglia d’oro per il miglior romanzo scritto da un californiano, assegnata dal Commonwealth Club of California. E con questa storia umoristica raggiunge la notorietà. A breve giro pubblica "La battaglia" (1936) e "Uomini e topi" (1937). Segue quello che viene considerato il suo miglior lavoro, "Furore" (1939). Nel 1940, quando il romanzo viene adattato per lo schermo, riceve il premio Pulitzer. Altri romanzi arriveranno, come il grande "La valle dell’Eden" (1952). Nelle sue opere, Steinbeck ritrae spesso personaggi della classe operaia che affrontano la Grande depressione in California, esprimendo sensibilità e compassione verso i più deboli.
