The Nobel Prize-winning Steinbeck wrote this 1942 novel about the invasion of a small peaceful country by the overwhelming war machine of a large dictatorship in 1942. It was immediately recognized by the public to be about Germany's 1940 invasion of Norway and Steinbeck received the Haakon VII Cross of Freedom at the end of the war for his contributions to the Norwegian resistance movement. First Edition first printing points of issue: printers name missing from copyright page and stray period between "talk" and "this" in line 11 page 112. About 4 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches 188 pages in blue cloth-covered boards with silver-lettered title and author in silver box on front cover and silver lettering on spine. Sorry no dustjacket. Spine is moderately faded as is title/author box still visible and legible corners lightly bumped mild surface and edge wear. Text edges show light foxing and soiling inside covers and end pages age-tanned in margins. Some one-syllable words mostly pronouns and conjunctions underlined in pencil on pages 61 63 69 and 87. All that noted book is basically complete and clean with tight binding and intact hinges. It shows no tearing chipping or creasing. Not ex-library or remaindered. Remains a decent reading/study copy or a place holder. The book was the basis for both stage and screen adaptations during the war and Euopean resistance organizations published translations throughout the war.
