Questa pratica era stata infatti fino a quel momento prerogativa del solo ordine dei Frati predicatori. Si chiede Prospero Lambertini se si possa senza dubbio affermare che la devozione del Rosario venne istituita da San Domenico. Secondo Lambertini fu San Domenico l'istitutore del rosario. Infatti la pratica di recitare quindici decadi di Ave Maria e quindici Paternostri meditando i quindici misteri della vita morte e resurrezione di Cristo non si incontra mai tra i fedeli prima dell'epoca di San Domenico.
