Moderate wear and foxing to extremities of covers spine is quite tanned and rubbed with foxing front hinge is shaken and just started but secure else a good to very good copy with the text and illustrations quite fresh and clean. . With an autograph letter signed by Henry Stevens tipped onto second front flyleaf. ALS one large octavo page 28 lines on first page of folio sheet folded to make four pages Barnet Vermont December 29th 1848 to a Mr. Ingraham of Philadelphia. The letter to "Dear Sir" with good personal content includes references to Continental money a printing project and his sons stating in part: ". The package of Continental money you speak of I should be very glad to receive. My son Simon is in the office with Hon. Thaddeus Stevens at the City of Lancaster. I will direct him to call on you for the said package. As to the object of your young friend to print the Trials under the Alien and Sedition law there were but two cases in this State Harwell & Lyon. would expect the records of Court are now in Rutland. will make inquiry. Lyon was for a time a distinguished man in the state. Harwell has several sons. I flatter myself that they will willingly furnish all particulars. my son Henry arrived in London. He speaks of being very successful in his business. Your friend Henry Stevens". Henry Stevens 1791-1867 noted "Bibliographer and Lover of Books" was born in Barnet Vermont where he became a justice of the peace and later served in the state legislature from 1826-1827. An avid book collector he founded the Vermont Historical and Antiquarian Society 1n 1838; his sons Henry Stevens Jr. and Benjamin Franklin Stevens were book dealers who resided in London. Large octavo grained ivory cloth spine and corners red morocco spine label stamped in gilt marbled paper-covered boards pp. xii 211 1 illustrated with a frontispiece portrait and two other engraved portraits marbled endpapers; printed at the Chiswick Press.
